The Shire of Bridgetown–Greenbushes is a local government area in the South West region of Western Australia, about southeast of Bunbury and about south of the state capital, Perth. The Shire covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Bridgetown. History The Shire of Bridgetown–Greenbushes was established on 26 March 1970 with the amalgamation of the Shire of Bridgetown and the Shire of Greenbushes. Greenbushes, Western Australia
Greenbushes is a timber and mining town located in the South West region of Western Australia. The 2021 population was 365. History Greenbushes was founded as a mining town in 1888 following a surveyor's discovery of tin in 1886. Greenbushes was named after the bright green '' Oxylobium lanceolatum'' that contrasted against the grey eucalyptus trees. The railway from Donnybrook to Bridgetown opened in 1898, with Greenbushes station located approximately six kilometres north of the main townsite. The area surrounding the railway station was renamed North Greenbushes to reduce confusion. A separate town site of South Greenbushes, also known as Bunbury End began in 1896. The town had its own post office, hall and strong community until the 1930s when most moved to the main town site. The town boasted its own cricket team as well as many other groups. Freemasons Hotel, Bridgetown
The Freemasons Hotel is a heritage-listed hotel in Bridgetown, Western Australia. It is located at 2 Steere Street, at the corner of Hampton Street (South Western Highway). History The first Freemasons Hotel in Bridgetown was originally known as the Warner Hotel, located at the corner of Hampton Street and Phillips Street. A provisional hotel licence for the site was granted to Frederick Stanforth Warner in 1898. It was likely partially built by 1899, when it was listed for sale. The hotel opened in July 1900, with Warner as the proprietor. In November 1901 the Governor Sir Arthur Lawley, 6th Baron Wenlock, Arthur Lawley, visiting for the Nelson Agricultural Show, renamed it the Freemasons Hotel. The hotel was taken over by P. Diprose , followed shortly by Robert Arthur John Crawford in 1902. By 1903 Bunning Bros owned the hotel. The State Register of Heritage Places is the heritage register of historic sites in Western Australia deemed significant at the state level by the Heritage Council of Western Australia. History In the 1970s, following its establishment of the National Trust of Western Australia, the National Trust created a set of classified properties, and following legislation requiring inventories, Local Government authorities in Western Australia produced a subsequent set of Municipal Inventories, which then resulted in items then being included in the state register. Yornup, Western Australia
Yornup is a small town in the South West region of Western Australia, situated between Bridgetown and Manjimup on the South Western Highway. It was primarily a milling settlement, and Greenacres Mill continues to this day. A timber company, Lewis and Reid, built a mill in town that was sold in 1923 to Bunning Brothers, who upgraded the mill in 1935 and continued to operate until 1951 when the Donnelly River mill commenced operations. A railway line between the Donnelly Mill and Yornup was built in 1948 and remained in use until the last steam train was retired in 1970. At one point, Yornup had a school, post office, hall and stores; only the hall remains today, used for community dances. The school was relocated to the rear of 144 Hampton Street, Bridgetown, in March 1996 in anticipation of the construction of a heritage precinct, which never eventuated.
