Asociación Deportiva Santos, commonly known simply as Santos de Guápiles, is a Costa Rican association football club, which currently plays in the Liga FPD. The club plays in Estadio Ebal Rodríguez in Guápiles, Limón, Costa Rica. History The club was founded in 1961 and have never been league champions. They were runner-up twice, in 2001–02 and in the 2012 Verano championship. They reached the top tier after winning promotion in 1999 after beating Municipal Liberia in a May 1999 play-off final marred by violence off the pitch. Estadio Ebal Rodriguez is a multi-use stadium in Guápiles, Costa Rica. It is currently used mostly for football (soccer), football matches and is the home stadium of Santos de Guápiles. The stadium holds 3,000 people. History Alajuelense's Wilson Muñoz scored the first Primera División goal scored in the stadium in a 1999 4-0 league win over the hosts. The stadium is currently undergoing a number of renovations. An artificial pitch has been installed, the building was newly painted, the transmission cabins were improved and a roof for the main stand will follow up. The Primera División of Costa Rica, commonly known as Fútbol de Primera División (FPD), and Liga Promerica for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional association football division in Costa Rica. It is administered by the Unión de Clubes de Fútbol de la Primera División (UNAFUT). The league consists of 12 teams, with the last-placed team relegated to the Liga de Ascenso. The league was founded in 1921, with Herediano crowned as the first champions. Saprissa is the most successful club having won the championship a record 37 times. Limón
Limón (), commonly known as Puerto Limón, is a district, the capital city and main hub of Limón province, as well as of the Limón canton in Costa Rica. It is the seventh largest city in Costa Rica, with a population of over 55,000, and is home of the Afro-Costa Rican community. Part of the community traces its roots to Italian, Jamaican and Chinese laborers who worked on a late nineteenth-century railroad project that connected San José to Puerto Limón. Deportivo Saprissa is a Costa Rican sports club, mostly known for its football team. The club is based in San Juan de Tibás, San José, and play their home games at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Aymá. The team's signature colours are purple (burgundy) and white. It is the main team representing the capital, but with the distinction of being massively followed throughout the whole country and overseas.
