Rødøy is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is part of the Helgeland traditional region. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Vågaholmen. Other villages include Gjerøy, Jektvika, Kilboghamn, Melfjordbotn, Oldervika, Sørfjorden, and Tjong. The municipality consists of many islands to the west of Norway's second biggest glacier, Svartisen. The municipality is the 162nd largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. Rødøy is the 324th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 1,153. The municipality's population density is and its population has decreased by 12.7% over the previous 10-year period. Helgeland
Helgeland is the most southerly district in Northern Norway. Generally speaking, Helgeland refers to the part of Nordland county that is located south of the Arctic Circle. It is bordered in the north by the Saltfjellet mountains and Svartisen glacier, which form a natural border with the Salten district. In the south, Helgeland borders Trøndelag county. Melfjordbotn or Melfjorden is a village in Rødøy Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The village is located at the eastern end of the Melfjorden, southwest of the Svartisen glacier. The Saltfjellet–Svartisen National Park lies about north of the village. The village is fairly remote, with only one road leading in and out of the village, the Norwegian County Road 355, which was built in 1982. Gjerøy or Gjerdøya is an island in the municipality of Rødøy in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in a group of islands located west of the peninsula between the Tjongsfjorden and Melfjorden. It lies south of the island of Rødøya, north of the island of Rangsundøya, and west of the island of Renga. The main village on the island is called Gjerøy. Svartisen is a collective term for two glaciers located in Nordland county in northern Norway. It is part of Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park, located in the Saltfjell mountain range. The glaciers are located in the municipalities of Beiarn, Meløy, Rana, and Rødøy. Svartisen consists of two separate glaciers that are separated by the long Vesterdalen valley.
