Rugby union in Indonesia is a minor but growing sport, dating back several decades, and which has experienced fluctuations in its success. Rugby World Cup
The Rugby World Cup is a men's rugby union tournament contested every four years between the top international teams. The tournament is administered by World Rugby, the sport's international governing body. The winners are awarded the Webb Ellis Cup, named after William Webb Ellis, who according to a popular legend, invented rugby by picking up the ball during a football game. The tournament was first held in 1987 and was co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. Four countries have won the trophy; New Zealand and South Africa three times, Australia twice, and England once. South Africa is the current champion, having defeated England in the 2019 tournament final. Kalimantan () is the Indonesian portion of the island of Borneo. It constitutes 73% of the island's area. The non-Indonesian parts of Borneo are Brunei and East Malaysia. History Rugby was first introduced in Indonesia during the Dutch colonial period, and was played mostly by ex-pats. In March 1976 an Indonesian Sevens squad, alongside twelve other nations, participated in the inaugural Hong Kong Sevens tournament. Indonesia returned to Hong Kong again for the 1976 tournament where they lost to Tonga in the plate final. Indonesia continued to participate in the tournament until 1986 after which, interest began to wane and the program went on hiatus. Indonesia returned to competitive sevens rugby at the 2012 HSBC Asian Rugby Sevens Series after having some success with their fifteens program. Indonesia National Rugby Union Team
The Indonesia national rugby union team represents Indonesia in rugby union. They are nicknamed the "Rhinos". The team is a full member of World Rugby. They have yet to play in the Rugby World Cup. The Indonesian squad was formed in 2006 to attend the IRB sanctioned Six Division Asian Rugby Football Tournament between Brunei, Laos, Cambodia and Indonesia. Jakarta Komodos Rugby Club
The Jakarta Komodos Rugby Football Club (JKRFC) is a rugby union club based in Jakarta, Indonesia. History The Jakarta Komodos Rugby Football Club was formed as ISCI Rugby in 1971 by members of the International Sports Club of Indonesia. The club has promoted the development of rugby in Indonesia, especially among young Indonesians. In 2012, when Jakarta formed a regular rugby union competition, there were four clubs: Jakarta Banteng, Jakarta Komodos, Jakarta Japan Rugby Gila (JJRG) Samurai, and the Bandung Rams. The Jakarta Komodos were the winners of the inaugural competition. The Hong Kong Sevens () is an rugby sevens tournament held annually in Hong Kong on a weekend in late March or early April. Considered the premier tournament on the World Rugby Sevens Series competition, the Hong Kong Sevens is currently the seventh tournament on the World Series calendar (following the Canada Sevens. The tournament spans three days, beginning on a Friday and concluding on Sunday. The tournament is organised each year by the Hong Kong Rugby Union (HKRU). Rugby World Cup Sevens (RWCS) is the quadrennial world championship of rugby sevens, a variant of rugby union. Organised by World Rugby, it currently consists of men's and women's tournaments, and is the highest level of competition in the sport outside of the Summer Olympics. The first tournament was held in 1993 in Scotland, and was won by England.
