The Roman Catholic Diocese of Sandomierz ( la, Sandomirien(sis)) is a diocese located in the city of Sandomierz in the Ecclesiastical province of Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lublin, Lublin in Poland. History The Diocese of Sandomierz was created on 30 June 1818 by Pope Pius VII in accordance with the Bull ''Ex imposita nobis''. In 1981, its name was changed to the Diocese of Sandomierz-Radom but on 25 March 1992 the diocese of Radom was split off as part of a reorganization of the church in Poland by Pope John Paul II which added to Sandomierz 7 deaneries from Przemysl, two from Lublin and one from Tarnow. Sandomierz Cathedral
Cathedral Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sandomierz ( pl, Bazylika katedralna Narodzenia NMP w Sandomierzu) is a Gothic architecture, gothic cathedral constructed in 1360. The cathedral was renovated in the baroque style in the 18th century, and first received the rank of cathedral in 1818. Blood libel paintings This cathedral contains a series of paintings built into the church's wooden panelling depicting the ''Martyrologium Romanum''. Adam Odzimek (7 October 1944 – 13 March 2022) was a Polish Roman Catholic prelate. Odzimek was born in Radom, Poland, on 7 October 1944. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1969. Szczepan Hołowczyc '' de armis'' Pierzchała (19 August 1741–27 August 1823) was Archbishop of Warsaw from 17 December 1819 until his death and a Senator of Congress Poland. He was the son of Basil and Mary Hołowczyc (), who came from a Belarusian noble family that was located near Pinsk. He would be ordained in 1772. From 1774 to 1776, he would travel Europe for scientific purposes; upon returning to Poland, he was made secretary to Andrzej Młodziejowski and later Michał Jerzy Poniatowski. Władysław Adam Prosper Burzyński OFM '' de armis'' Trzywdar (19 July 1755 – 9 September 1830) was a Roman Catholic bishop and missionary. He was Bishop of the Diocese of Sandomierz and a member of the Senate of Congress Poland from 1820 until his death. Life Adam was born in Wojakowa on 19 July 1755 to Feliks and Anna () Burzyński, members of the gentry. He became a member of the Order of Friars Minor in December 1771, adopting the name "Prosper". He would study theology in the Franciscan monastery in Kraków; following his ordination on 19 September 1778, he would travel to Rome. He would become a missionary and travel to Egypt; during his stay in Egypt, he worked as a chaplain and interpreter for Napoleon's army. Klemens Andzrej Bąkiewicz '' de armis'' Topór (1760 – 2 January 1842) was a bishop-elect of the Diocese of Sandomierz. Bąkiewicz was born to Paul and Agnet Bąkiewicz in 1760; he would be baptized on 1 December at the church of Chmiel. Between 1786 and 1788, he served as professor of mathematics in the city of Kielce. Following the death of Adam Prosper Burzyński in 1830, Bąkiewicz would assume the role of apostolic administrator. Prior to Burzyński's death, he served as archdeacon. Bąkiewicz was appointed as bishop on 9 January 1840; he would not be consecrated and was buried in Sandomierz Cathedral. Józef Joachim Goldtmann (21 March 1782 – 22 March 1853) was a bishop of the Diocese of Sandomierz. Goldtmann was born on 21 March 1782 to Charles and Francisca Goldtmann in Wejherowo; he would be baptized the same day. In 1804, Goldtmann entered the seminary in Łowicz. He would be ordained a priest in 1806. In addition, he would be appointed canon for the cathedral of the Diocese of Włocławek in 1824 and officiant of the diocese in 1825. On 15 September 1838, Goldtmann was consecrated bishop of Włocławek and titular bishop of Carystus; he would begin his term on 17 September. Antoni Franciszek Ksawery Sotkiewicz (12 January 1826 4 May 1901) was a Roman Catholic bishop of Sandomierz and professor. Ordained a priest in 1849, he served as a professor in various institutions before being consecrated Bishop of Sandomierz in 1883. Biography Sotkiewicz was born on 12 January 1826. He begun attending the seminary in Sandomierz in 1842. He was ordained a subdeacon on 25 July 1849 and a deacon on 29 July; he was ordained a priest on 5 August by Józef Goldtmann. He obtained a doctorate of theology from the in 1850. On 24 August 1853, he was appointed viceregent and a professor of the diocesian seminary in Sandomierz.
