Federal Communications Commission
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent agency of the United States federal government that regulates communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable across the United States. The FCC maintains jurisdiction over the areas of broadband access, fair competition, radio frequency use, media responsibility, public safety, and homeland security. The FCC was formed by the Communications Act of 1934 to replace the radio regulation functions of the Federal Radio Commission. The FCC took over wire communication regulation from the Interstate Commerce Commission. The FCC's mandated jurisdiction covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the territories of the United States. The FCC also provides varied degrees of cooperation, oversight, and leadership for similar communications bodies in other countries of North America. The FCC is funded entirely by regulatory fees. WAGR (AM)
WAGR (1340 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a Gospel music format to the Lumberton, North Carolina, United States, area. The station is currently owned by WAGR Broadcasting, Inc. History Al Kahn bought WAGR in January 1957, 27 months after the station signed on, and signed WJSK on the air in 1964. He ran both stations until 1992. After Messa Corp. bought the stations from Southeastern Broadcasting Corp. in July 1992, WAGR and WJSK ended their tradition of airing only Lumberton high school football and began carrying games involving other Robeson County teams. In 1993, Arthur DeBerry and Associates of Durham bought WAGR and WJSK. After WJSK was sold to Cape Fear Broadcasting in 1998, Wes Cookman, owner of Fayetteville radio station WIDU, bought WAGR, along with WEWO in Laurinburg. WAVQ (1400 AM) is a radio station licensed to serve Jacksonville, North Carolina, United States. The station is owned by and operated by Donald Curtis' Eastern Airwaves, LLC. WAVQ broadcasts a classic hits music format serving Jacksonville and Onslow County, North Carolina. The station was assigned the WAVQ call sign by the Federal Communications Commission on February 6, 2009. History WAVQ signed on in late 2008, under the callsign WSTK, offering an Oldies format as 1400 The Wave. The station was originally owned by Conner Media Corporation. The WAVQ call letters were assigned on February 6, 2009. On August 9, 2009 the format was changed to Sports-Talk as ESPN Radio 1400. WAUG (AM)
WAUG (750 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a Mainstream urban format. Licensed to New Hope, North Carolina, United States, the station serves the Raleigh–Durham area. The station is owned by St. Augustine's University and features programming from American Urban Radio Networks and the Radio One-owned Syndication One. WAUG radio is a daytime-only operation, leaving the air at sunset to prevent interference to 50,000-watt WSB in Atlanta, the Class A clear-channel station on 750 AM. The university also runs a low-powered TV station, WAUG-LD (channel 8). WAUG-LD is carried by Spectrum Cable on digital cable channel 168 in Raleigh. The station is currently owned by Curtis Media Group of Raleigh, North Carolina and features predominantly locally produced programming, including Bill Fisher in the Morning, as well as Mike Kelly's Swap Shop, and many others. Appalachian State University
Appalachian State University (; Appalachian, App State, App, or ASU) is a public university in Boone, North Carolina. It was founded as a teachers college in 1899 by brothers B. B. and D. D. Dougherty and the latter's wife, Lillie Shull Dougherty. The university expanded to include other programs in 1967 and joined the University of North Carolina System in 1971. The university enrolls more than 20,600 students. It offers more than 150 bachelor's degrees and 70 graduate degree programs, including two doctoral programs. WASU-FM (90.5 FM) is a college radio station broadcasting an alternative music format. The station is owned by Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, which is also the station's city of license. The station plays a college rock format and does a weekly news segment called App 1800 covering local issues. WARR (AM)
WARR (1520 AM) is a radio station broadcasting an African American Variety format to the Warrenton, North Carolina, United States, area. The station is currently owned by Logan Darensburg d/b/a Darensburg Broadcasting. WARR went on the air in 1970 in Warren County, North Carolina. Transmitter output was 1,000 watts at the time. The station was co-founded by Vernon Steed, owner of the Warren Theater. His partner was Jim Mayers, the owner of WSRC located in Durham, North Carolina at the time. The transmitter power was later increased to 5,000 watts during the daytime, but remained at 1,000 watts during critical hours. WARR holds a daytime-only license. WAME (550 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a classic country format. Licensed to Statesville, North Carolina, United States. The station is owned by Statesville Family Radio Corporation. WAME's programming can also be heard on FM at 92.9 MHz over translator W225BD, which operates at 19 watts. The programming is currently a mix of locally produced programming and Dial Global's Classic Hit Country format. History Duke Family The station on 550 AM in Statesville, North Carolina began in 1955 as WDBM, and operated only during daytime hours with licensed power of 500 watts. WDBM was founded by Walter A.
