Anne Poulett
The Honourable Anne Poulett (11 July 1711 – 5 July 1785) was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons for sixteen years from 1769 until his death in 1785. Poulett was the fourth son of John Poulett, 1st Earl Poulett and was born on 11 July 1711. He received his unusual first name in honour of Queen Anne, who was his sponsor at his baptism. Poulett initially stood for election at Bridgwater in the 1768 general election, and although he was initially declared defeated the result was reversed on petition in 1769. He was returned unopposed in the 1774 general election and headed the poll at contested elections in 1780 and 1784. Throughout his career he was generally a supporter of Lord North, though occasionally voting against him. In 1780 Poulett presented to St Mary's Church in Bridgwater a magnificent 17th-century painting of ''The Descent from the Cross'', apparently captured when a Spanish warship was taken as a prize. Lieutenant-General The Honourable Vere Poulett (May 1761-15 March 1812), was a British soldier and politician. Poulett was a younger son of Vere Poulett, 3rd Earl Poulett, and Mary, daughter of Richard Butt. He was returned to parliament for Bridgewater in 1790, a seat he held until 1796 and again between 1806 and 1807. Poulett married Anne Lucy (née Becher). Earl Poulett ''(pronounced "Paulett")'' was a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1706 for John Poulett, 4th Baron Poulett. The Poulett family descended from Sir Anthony Paulet, son of Sir Amias Paulet, who served as Governor of Jersey and as Captain of the Guard to Queen Elizabeth I. The ancestral family seat was Hinton House in the village of Hinton St George, Somerset. His eldest son Sir John Poulett represented Somerset and Lyme Regis in the House of Commons. In 1627 he was raised to the Peerage of England as Baron Poulett, of Hinton St George in the County of Somerset. Lord Poulett later supported the Royalist cause in the Civil War. Colonel Poulett George Henry Somerset CB (19 June 1822 – 7 September 1875) was a British soldier and Conservative Party politician. Biography Somerset was the eldest son of Lord Charles Somerset by his second wife, Lady Mary Poulett, Somerset was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards in 1839. Vere Poulett, 3rd Earl Poulett (18 May 1710 – 14 April 1788), styled The Honourable Vere Poulett until 1764, was an English peer. Poulett was the son of John Poulett, 1st Earl Poulett, and Bridget Bertie, daughter of Peregrine Bertie. He was the brother of John Poulett, 2nd Earl Poulett, Peregrine Poulett and Anne Poulett, and was educated at Taunton Grammar School. He was returned to parliament for Bridgwater in 1741, a seat he held until 1747. He succeeded his elder brother in the earldom in 1764. In 1771 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Devon, which he remained until his death. Lord Poulett married Mary Butt, daughter of Richard Butt, of Arlington, Gloucestershire. John Poulett, 5th Earl Poulett
Colonel John Poulett, 5th Earl Poulett (5 July 1783 – 1864), styled Viscount Hinton from 1788 to 1819, was an English peer and militia officer. Educated at Harrow and Brasenose College, Oxford, Hinton was commissioned a captain in the 1st Somerset Militia in 1801. His father was made colonel of that regiment in 1803, and on 20 September 1804, Hinton himself became colonel of the 2nd Somerset Militia, and was appointed a deputy lieutenant of Somerset on 10 January 1805. Upon the death of his father in January 1819, he succeeded to the title of Earl Poulett, and also succeeded his father as colonel of the 1st Somersetshire Militia. He commanded the regiment until 1852, when he was succeeded by his son Vere Poulett, Viscount Hinton. John Poulett, 4th Earl Poulett, KT (3 April 1756 – 14 January 1819), styled Viscount Hinton between 1764 and 1788, was a British peer and militia officer. Poulett was the son of Vere Poulett, 3rd Earl Poulett, by Mary Butt, daughter of Richard Butt, of Arlington, Gloucestershire. From 22 January 1779 until 1798 he was Colonel of the East Devon Militia, which was on active service in home defence until 1783. He succeeded his father in the earldom in 1788. In 1792 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, a post he held until his death. He was also a Recorder of Bridgwater. The East Devon Militia was again embodied, under his colonelcy, for active service in March 1794, and he was also commissioned colonel of the Somersetshire Fencible Cavalry.
