Portsmouth F.C. Seasons
This is a list of seasons played by Portsmouth Football Club in English and European football, from 1899 (the year of the club's first FA Cup entry and elected straight into the first division of the Southern League) to the most recent completed season. Football was played in the city of Portsmouth from the 1850s and was popular for sailors and dockers to play in the city. The current club was founded in 1898 with John Brickwood, owner of the local brewery, as chairman, and Frank Brettell as the club's first manager. A common myth is that the club's first goalkeeper was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. While Conan Doyle did play as ''AC Smith'' for an amateur side, Portsmouth Athletic Football Club, that flourished from 1882 to 1894, the first goalkeeper of the professional era was Matt Reilly who previously played for the successful Royal Artillery team. Portsmouth F
Portsmouth ( ) is a port and city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire in southern England. The city of Portsmouth has been a unitary authority since 1 April 1997 and is administered by Portsmouth City Council. Portsmouth is the most densely populated city in the United Kingdom, with a population last recorded at 208,100. Portsmouth is located south-west of London and south-east of Southampton. Portsmouth is mostly located on Portsea Island; the only English city not on the mainland of Great Britain. Portsea Island has the third highest population in the British Isles after the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. After the creation of the Premier League, the name First Division was given to the second-tier division (from 1992). The name ceased to exist after the 2003–04 First Division season. 1908–09 In English Football
The 1908–09 season was the 38th season of competitive football in England. Overview Tottenham Hotspur played their first ever season in the Football League, gaining promotion to the First Division in the process. Spurs, along with Bradford Park Avenue entered the Second Division to replace Lincoln City and Stoke. This year started a new competition: the Charity Shield; a match between the champion of the Professional League vs. the champion of the Amateur League. The first championship went to Manchester United, in a replayed final against Queens Park Rangers. Events *5 December 1908 - Sunderland defeat Newcastle United 9-1, after the game was tied 1-1 at half-time. This is the joint biggest away victory in the top division in Football League history. 1905–06 In English Football
The 1905–06 season was the 35th season of competitive football in England. Events Following the increase in size of the Football League from 36 clubs to 40, and with Doncaster Rovers having been relegated from the Second Division, four new clubs were elected into the league, along with Stockport County who had won the Lancashire Combination. These new clubs were: Chelsea, Hull City, Leeds City and Clapton Orient. Crystal Palace were formed this year but failed to gain election to the Football League by one vote and instead started their existence in the Southern League. Bristol City, the only non-London League side south of Birmingham at the time, is promoted to the First Division as champions. 1904–05 In English Football
The 1904–05 season was the 34th season of competitive football in England. Overview Events Stockport County were replaced by Doncaster Rovers in the Second Division. At the end of the 1904–05 season, the First Division was expanded to include 20 teams; Bury and Notts County were elected back into the First Division from the Second Division. Manchester City, the previous season's FA Cup winners, were discovered to have been paying their players up to £6 or £7 per week instead of the legal maximum of £4 per week. The club's influential winger Billy Meredith was accused of bribing Aston Villa player Alex Leake and was faced with an 18-month ban from The Football Association, who further rebuked the club by dismissing five of its directors and banning a total of 17 players from ever playing for the club again. The 1903–04 season was the 33rd season of competitive football in England. For the first time ever, a London (and Southern) team, Woolwich Arsenal, were promoted to the First Division and made the league's reach nationwide. They joined champions Preston North End in the top flight, after ''the Lilywhites'' beat arch-rivals Blackpool in the final game of the season to clinch the championship. The 1901–02 season was the 31st season of competitive football in England. League changes Doncaster Rovers and Bristol City replaced Walsall and New Brighton Tower in the Football League. Burton United were formed by a merger of Burton Swifts with former League side Burton Wanderers. Bristol City were the first non-London Southern side in the league. The 1900–01 season was the 30th season of competitive football in England. Overview Events Stockport County played their first season in the football league. Blackpool also returned to the league, at the expenses of Loughborough and Luton Town. Despite a run of four victories at the start of the season, Aston Villa finished fourth from bottom. Tottenham Hotspur became the first and only non-League club to date, to win the FA Cup - winning 3-1 in a replay against Sheffield United of the First Division.
