Pontiothauma
''Pontiothauma'' is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Raphitomidae. Description The fusiform shell is not umbilicate, anteriorly rostrate and obliquely folded. The shell is spirally furrowed by lirae. The aperture ends in a short siphonal canal. The simple columella is not folded. The outer lip is thin, posteriorly wide but not deeply sinuate. The shell lacks an operculum. The enormously expanded rostrum, and the absence of eyes, radula, and operculum, at once separate this genus from any which it approaches in shell-character. Species Species within the genus ''Pontiothauma'' include: * '' Pontiothauma abyssicola'' Smith E. A., 1895 * '' Pontiothauma minus'' Smith E. A., 1906 * ''Pontiothauma mirabile'' Smith E. A., 1895 * '' Pontiothauma pacei'' Smith E. A., 1906 ;Species brought into synonymy: * ''Pontiothauma ergata'' Hedley, 1916: synonym of ''Belaturricula ergata'' (Hedley, 1916) * ''Pontiothauma fusiforme'' Habe, 1962: synonym of '' Spe ...

Pontiothauma Pacei
''Pontiothauma pacei'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Raphitomidae. Description The length of the shell attains 60 mm, its diameter 27 mm. The wide, fusiform shell is white. It contains about ten whorls (the upper ones are broken off). The remaining whorls are concave on top and somewhat angulate in the middle. They contain oblique, slender ribs and delicate, flexuous spiral lirae with increasing strength. The body whorl is slightly inflated and narrow at its top. The aperture is white within and measures about half the length of the shell. The thin outer lip shows a wide, but not deep sinus at its top. It is widely arcuate at its middle. The columella is smooth and contains a white, horny callus. The short siphonal canal is wide, oblique and somewhat recurved. This species differs from ''Pontiothauma mirabile ''Pontiothauma mirabile'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk Mollusca is the second-largest phy ...

Pontiothauma Mirabile
''Pontiothauma mirabile'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk Mollusca is the second-largest phylum of invertebrate animals after the Arthropoda, the members of which are known as molluscs or mollusks (). Around 85,000  extant species of molluscs are recognized. The number of fossil species is e ... in the family (biology), family Raphitomidae. Description The length of the shell attains 136 mm, its diameter 52 mm. The turreted, fusiform shell is white. The epidermis is more or less assumed. The Spire (mollusc), spire is elongated and acuminate. The shell contains probably 10 Whorl (mollusc), whorls with seven whorls remaining. These are convex, slowly and regularly increasing. They contain oblique and flexuous ribs (with their upper part and lower part fading away) and strong and close spiral lirae. The body whorl is somewhat swollen. The Aperture (mollusc), aperture is elongate and measures about half the length of the shell. The siph ...

Pontiothauma Minus
''Pontiothauma minus'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Raphitomidae. Description The length of the shell attains 30 mm, its diameter 14 mm. The white, ovate-fusiform shell contains about eight whorls (the upper ones are broken off). The remaining whorls are concave on top and somewhat convex below. They contains slightly angulate whorls. These are about eighteen in number, somewhat acute, and do not reach to the suture above, but terminate at the depression at the upper part of the whorls. The transverse lirae are fine, contiguous, and continuous over and between the ribs. The white aperture measures about half the length of the shell. The thin outer lip is slightly sinuate at its top. The columella is smooth and contains a white callus. The siphonal canal is wide, short and somewhat recurved. The animal is without eyes or operculum, and the foot is much flattened behind. Pontiothauma Abyssicola
''Pontiothauma abyssicola'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Raphitomidae. Description The length of the shell attains 50 mm, its diameter 24 mm. (Original description) The elongate, turreted shell is rather solid, imperforate. Its color is white, the epidermis a thin, pale olive-green. The shell contains six whorls. The depression or concavity at the upper part of the whorls produces a marginate appearance at the suture, and upon the margination the lines of growth are slightly puckered. The spiral striae are somewhat deep and have rather a regular look to the naked eye. The nodose plications at the angulation above do not extend far downwards, but soon become obsolete, so that the lower part of the whorls has a nearly even surface. The white aperture is oblong and measures just under half the length of the shell. The siphonal canal is very short and wide. It is slightly recurved. The thin outer lip is slightly sinuate under the excavatio ...

Raphitomidae
Raphitomidae is a family of small to medium-sized sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea.Bouchet P. & Rocroi J.-P. (Ed.) (2005). "Classification and nomenclator of gastropod families". ''Malacologia'' 47(1-2). . 397 pp. Bouchet, Kantor ''et al''. elevated in 2011 the subfamily Raphitominae (which at that point had been placed in the family Conidae) to the rank of family. This was based on a cladistical analysis of shell morphology, radular characteristics, anatomical characters, and a dataset of molecular sequences of three gene fragments. The family was found to be monophyletic. Description The Raphitomidae is the largest, most diverse and most variable taxon in the Conoidea, with the greatest number of species and the largest ecological range (from the tropics to the pole) and largest vertical range (intertidal to hadal depths). The shells of species in the Raphitomidae are very variable in shape (buccinoid to ovate, elongate-fusiform, or ...

Genus
Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of extant taxon, living and fossil organisms as well as Virus classification#ICTV classification, viruses. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family (taxonomy), family. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus. :E.g. ''Panthera leo'' (lion) and ''Panthera onca'' (jaguar) are two species within the genus ''Panthera''. ''Panthera'' is a genus within the family Felidae. The composition of a genus is determined by taxonomy (biology), taxonomists. The standards for genus classification are not strictly codified, so different authorities often produce different classifications for genera. There are some general practices used, however, including the idea that a newly defined genus should fulfill these three criteria to be descriptively useful: # monophyly – all descendants ...

Sea Snail
Sea snail is a common name for slow-moving marine gastropod molluscs, usually with visible external shells, such as whelk or abalone. They share the taxonomic class Gastropoda with slugs, which are distinguished from snails primarily by the absence of a visible shell. Definition Determining whether some gastropods should be called sea snails is not always easy. Some species that live in brackish water (such as certain neritids) can be listed as either freshwater snails or marine snails, and some species that live at or just above the high tide level (for example species in the genus '' Truncatella'') are sometimes considered to be sea snails and sometimes listed as land snails. Anatomy Sea snails are a very large group of animals and a very diverse one. Most snails that live in salt water respire using a gill or gills; a few species, though, have a lung, are intertidal, and are active only at low tide when they can move around in the air. These air-breathing species includ ...
