Oslo University Hospital ( no, Oslo universitetssykehus; OUS) is a university hospital in Oslo, Norway. With over 24,000 employees it is List of hospitals by staff, the largest hospital organization in Europe. It is affiliated with the University of Oslo Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Oslo and is one of the largest medical research institutions in Europe. Its oldest predecessor, Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet, Rikshospitalet (The National Hospital), was established as Norway's national teaching hospital in 1826 mainly on the basis of the Military Hospital (Norway), Military Hospital founded in 1807, while its academic tradition dates back to the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine in 1814. Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet is one of the four main campuses of Oslo University Hospital in Oslo, Norway. It was an independent hospital, ''Rigshospitalet'', later spelled ''Rikshospitalet'' ("The National Hospital"), from 1826 to 2009, when it merged with other university hospitals in Oslo. It is a highly specialized university hospital with special assignments in research and the development of new methods of treatment. Rikshospitalet is a part of Southern and Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority, and is affiliated with the University of Oslo. Bjørn Erikstein
Bjørn Kristoffer Erikstein (born 1952) is a Norwegian physician and civil servant, with prominent positions in the health sector. He took his cand.med. and dr.med. degrees at the University of Oslo. From 1993, he was a specialist in oncology. He worked as a physician at Radiumhospitalet and Ullevål Hospital. He entered hospital administration as vice chief executive of the Southern Norway Regional Health Authority in 2003. In December 2004 he took over as chief executive. From 2003 he was also chair of Buskerud Hospital and Radiumhospitalet, later Rikshospitalet-Radiumhospitalet after a merger. This double role as executive and chair within the same structure was abolished in 2005. Heroin-assisted treatment (HAT), or diamorphine assisted treatment, refers to a type of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) where semi-synthetic heroin is prescribed to opiate addicts who do not benefit from, or cannot tolerate, treatment with one of the established drugs used in opiate replacement therapy such as methadone or buprenorphine (brand name Subutex). Gaustad Hospital ( no, Gaustad sykehus) is a psychiatric hospital in the neighborhood of Gaustad in Oslo, Norway. Founded in 1855, it is Norway's oldest purpose-built psychiatric hospital. It opened as the nation's first insane asylum designed according to the guidelines in the Insane Act of 1848 (''Sinnssykeloven''). The facility was planned by Herman Wedel Major, based on the model of foreign institutions, and the building complex was designed by architect Heinrich Ernst Schirmer.
