Oil City (Alberta)
Oil City is an epithet in the province of Alberta, Canada, derived from the province's first major oil well and subsequently used to refer to Northern Albertan cities such as Edmonton and Fort McMurray. The epithet has been employed in the branding of businesses throughout the province, and as of 2021, yellow pages in Alberta show that at least twenty businesses continue to use the epithet in their business names. Waterton In 1892, the site of western Canada's first producing oil well in Waterton Lakes National Park was named Oil City. Oil was struck just over 300 meters below the surface. Although the site was named in 1892, it was not until 1901 that extensive extraction took place under the leadership of Allan P. Patrick and John Leeson with the Rocky Mountain Development Company. Oil City is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community located in Yazoo County, Mississippi, Yazoo County, Mississippi. Oil City is approximately west of Anding, Mississippi, Anding, south of Tinsley, Mississippi, Tinsley and approximately northwest of Bentonia, Mississippi, Bentonia. Oil City has a zip code of 39040. In 1939, the Tinsley Oil Field was discovered west of the settlement, which prompted a minor oil boom. In Oil City, "streets and commercial buildings" were "sold to optimistic business interests and speculators." However, development never materialized. Oil City is a city in Venango County, Pennsylvania known for its prominence in the initial exploration and development of the petroleum industry. It is located at a bend in the Allegheny River at the mouth of Oil Creek. Initial settlement of Oil City was sporadic, and tied to the iron industry.
