Fort Chiswell is a census-designated place (CDP) in Wythe County, Virginia, United States. The population was 939 at the 2010 census. Fort Chiswell is located at the junction of Interstates 77 and 81. Going west from Fort Chiswell, drivers find themselves on a double wrong-way concurrency - one of few in the nation. Interstate 77 northbound is overlapped with Interstate 81 southbound, drivers will find themselves oriented the right way again when exiting I-81 back to I-77 north towards Charleston or south to Charlotte. History The community name is derived from a frontier fort built in 1758 as an outpost during the French and Indian War. New River Trail State Park
New River Trail State Park is a rail trail and state park located entirely in southwest Virginia, extending from the trail's northeastern terminus in Pulaski to its southern terminus in Galax, with a spur from Fries Junction on the main trail to Fries. Designated a National Recreation Trail, the linear park follows of the New River, which is one of the five oldest rivers in the world. Headquartered in Foster Falls, roughly a third of the trail distance from Pulaski, the crushed stone multi-use trail was formally created in 1986, when Norfolk Southern Railway donated its discontinued right-of-way to the state of Virginia. State Route 121 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Max Meadows Road, the state highway runs from Interstate 77, I-81, U.S. Route 11, and US 52 at Fort Chiswell north to SR 1004 and SR 1006 in Max Meadows in eastern Wythe County. SR 121 is part of a Virginia Byway that continues south along US 52 and west along SR 610 to Wytheville. Route description SR 121 begins at a diamond interchange with I-77, I-81, and US 11 a short distance west of the interchange where I-77 turns south toward Charlotte and I-81 and US 11 continue east toward Roanoke.
