''Namazonurus campbelli'', commonly known as Campbell's girdled lizard, is a species of lizard in the family Cordylidae. A small girdled lizard, ''N. campbelli'' is endemic to Namibia. It is often mistaken for the more common Herero girdled lizard, '' N. pustulatus'', as they both are similar in size and have flattened bodies. ''N. campbelli'' lives in rock crevices and cracks on dry mountain slopes Etymology The generic name, ''Namazonurus'', contains "''zonurus'' " meaning "girdle-tailed". The specific name, ''campbelli'', is in honor of William A. Campbell (1880–1962), the owner of the Farm "Barby" where the type specimen was discovered. Cordylidae is a family of small- to medium-sized lizards that occur in southern and eastern Africa. They are commonly known as girdled lizards, spinytail lizards, or girdle-tail lizards. Cordylidae is closely related to the family Gerrhosauridae, occurring in Africa and Madagascar. These two scientific families of lizards, known as Cordyliformes or Cordyloidea, are sometimes combined into a larger concept of Cordylidae. Vivian Frederick Maynard FitzSimons, born in Pietermaritzburg, was a notable herpetologist in South Africa. Also, he contributed to the collection of spermatophyte samples for the National Herbarium which has become part of the South African National Biodiversity Institute at the Pretoria National Botanical Garden. In 1937, together with Anna Amelia Obermeyer, he collected some of the earliest plant specimens from the Eastern Highlands of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). In biology, a species is the basic unit of classification and a taxonomic rank of an organism, as well as a unit of biodiversity. William Roy "Bill" Branch (12 May 1946, London, England – 14 October 2018, Port Elizabeth, South Africa) was a British-South-African herpetologist. Branch studied at the University of Southampton where he remained until completing his Ph.D. degree (''Studies on a foetal-specific alpha-globulin FPin the rabbit'' ). From 1972 he worked as a scientist in the Life Sciences Division of the Atomic Energy Board in Pretoria doing research on, inter alia, liver cancer, but returned to the University of Southampton in 1976 to take up a post-doctoral research fellowship in the Department of Biology studying the synthesis of chemicals in the liver of foetal rabbits. He started working at Port Elizabeth Museum in 1979 and retired in 2011, when he was appointed as Research Associate and Curator Emeritus.
