Murderecords
Murderecords is an independent record label that releases the music of the Canadian rock band Sloan. Originally formed in 1992 to produce just the records of that band, it later released work of other bands including Eric's Trip, The Hardship Post, Al Tuck, Stinkin' Rich, Hip Club Groove, The Inbreds, Thrush Hermit, and The Super Friendz, and was Canada's best-known indie label in the 1990s. Later, the roster was stripped bare, and released Sloan albums exclusively for nearly a decade. In 2008, however, albums by Will Currie and the Country French and Pony Da Look were released by the label. The Super Friendz
The Super Friendz are a Canadian indie rock band from Halifax, Nova Scotia. They were initially active between 1994 and 1997, before reforming in 2003. Contemporaries of Sloan, their early work was on Sloan's Murderecords label. Career The Super Friendz were formed in 1994 by three King's College students Charles Austin (vocals and bass), Matt Murphy (vocals and guitar), Drew Yamada (vocals and guitar). Until 1996 the band had no permanent drummer, at various times Chris Murphy (no relation to Matt) of Sloan, Cliff Gibb of Thrush Hermit, and Dave Marsh filled the role until Lonnie James was chosen as a permanent member. Thrush Hermit
Thrush Hermit was a Canadian alternative rock band active in the 1990s, known for their "highly energetic, humorous, and unpredictable performances," as quoted by Vice News. History Thrush Hermit was formed in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1992 by Joel Plaskett (vocals, guitar), Rob Benvie (vocals, guitar), Ian McGettigan (vocals, bass), and Michael Catano (drums). Catano was replaced by Cliff Gibb in 1994; Gibb in turn left the band in 1999 and was replaced by Benn Ross. They signed with Murderecords in 1994 in time to release their ''Smart Bomb'' EP, which featured Benvie's song "French Inhale" and Plaskett's "Hated It". The former would get some rotation on MuchMusic, which then held a reputation for more alternative programming, while the latter would end up in the Kevin Smith film ''Mallrats''. Will Currie And The Country French
Will Currie & The Country French is a Canadian indie rock music group formed in 2006 in Waterloo. The band consists of singer and pianist Will Currie, guitarist Dan Beacock, drummer Aaron Mariash, and bassist Daniel MacPherson. Biography Will Currie & The Country French was originally conceived in early 2006 as a few songs were written in a small glass room in the basement of the Music Faculty at Wilfrid Laurier University. Currie later assembled a small troupe of fellow music students to form a piano pop band. They began to tour around southern Ontario, and in 2007 caught the attention of Jay Ferguson of Sloan, who said they were the best live band he had seen that year, and signed them to his Murderecords music label. Sloan is a Canadian rock music, rock band based in Toronto and originally from Halifax Regional Municipality, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Sloan have released thirteen full-length albums and have received nine Juno Award nominations, winning one. Eric's Trip
Eric's Trip is a Canadian indie rock band from Moncton, New Brunswick. Eric's Trip achieved prominence as the first Canadian band to be signed to Seattle's flagship grunge label Sub Pop in the early 1990s. The band had a minor hit in alternative circles with the single "View Master", from the 1994 album ''Forever Again.'' History Eric's Trip formed in 1990 when musicians Rick White and Chris Thompson joined Julie Doiron and Ed Vaughan (who was later replaced by Mark Gaudet). They took their name from a Sonic Youth song and developed a unique sound which fused elements of the distorted guitar of Dinosaur Jr., vocal elements of My Bloody Valentine, the folk leanings of Neil Young, and the lo-fi aesthetic of Sebadoh. White described their sound as "sappy melodic pop music on top of thick distortion." Gaudet's description was more succinct: "dreamy punk". Winning Hearts
''Winning Hearts'' is the fourth and final studio album from Canadian alternative band The Inbreds, released on Murderecords in 1998. The album was noted for paring back from the expanded "full band" sound the band explored on ''It's Sydney or the Bush'', and returning to their more traditional bass guitar and drums configuration. The album was mixed and recorded at The Gas Station, and mastered at Umbrella Sound in Toronto, Ontario. It held the number one spot on ''Chart (magazine), Chart Magazine''s survey of Canadian campus radio for two consecutive months. However, after completing their tour to support the album, the duo decided to break up and pursue other projects. The Inbreds were a Canadian alternative rock band formed in 1992. Originally from Kingston, Ontario,"Kingston's Inbreds don't need guitars". One Chord To Another
''One Chord to Another'' is the third studio album by the Canadian rock band Sloan. The album was released in Canada through Murderecords in 1996 and in the United States through The Enclave in 1997. Like their previous album, ''One Chord to Another'' is a Beatles-influenced power pop record. ''One Chord to Another'' was a few of firsts for Sloan. It was the band's first LP not to be released through Geffen Records. It was also the band's first album to win a Juno Award. Recording Sloan began recording ''One Chord to Another'' in December, 1995. The album was recorded over a two-week period and cost $10,000 to make, $110,000 less than the cost of their previous album. It was the band's first album to feature trumpets. Richard Terfry (born March 4, 1972), better known by his stage name Buck 65, is a Canadian alternative hip hop artist. Underpinned by an extensive background in abstract hip hop, his more recent music has extensively incorporated blues, country, rock, folk and avant-garde influences. Al Tuck (born December 23, 1966), is a Canadian songwriter and folksinger from Prince Edward Island who has spent much of his career based in Halifax Regional Municipality, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Early life Tuck was born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Summerside, Prince Edward Island, the son of editorial cartoonist and Anglican cleric Canon Robert Tuck. The Hardship Post
The Hardship Post was a Canadian alternative rock band, that formed in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1992 and moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, during the Halifax Pop Explosion of the early 1990s. The band originally consisted of vocalist and guitarist Sebastian Lippa, bassist Mike Kean and drummer Matt Clarke. Initially signed to Murderecords, they released the EPs ''Mood Ring'' and ''Hack'' in 1993, and undertook their first cross-Canada tour to support the recordings.
