Matoury is a commune of French Guiana, an overseas region and department of France located in South America. Matoury is a southern suburb of Cayenne, the ''préfecture'' and largest city of French Guiana. Cayenne – Félix Eboué Airport, the main international airport of French Guiana, is located in the commune of Matoury. Air Guyane Express has its head office on the grounds of the airport. Mont Grand Matoury Nature Reserve
The Mont Grand Matoury Nature Reserve ( French: ''Réserve naturelle nationale du mont Grand Matoury'') is a nature reserve in French Guiana, France. The reserve is located about eight kilometres south of Cayenne in the commune of Matoury It has been named after the eponymous mountain which measures 234 metres, It was first protected in 1942, and extended in 2006. Overview The nature reserve is located at a spot where many different environments meet. The lowlands of the coast with mangrove forests meet the old-growth forests of the highland. Numerous creeks flow through the area, and the reserve is surrounded by swamps and savannahs. In 1942, an area of 166 hectares around the mountain was designated as a nature reserve. The Mirande trail gives access to the mountain. The visitor can either follow a botanical circuit or a more sportive hiking trail. Balata, French Guiana
Balata is a town in the commune of Matoury in French Guiana. It is located at the junction of RN1 and RN2, and started as a Haitian shanty town. History Balata is named after the nearby Balata Creek. It is located at the junction of RN1 and RN2 in Matoury. Haitian emigration to French Guiana started in the late 1960s, and accelerated from the late 1980s onwards. At first, they settled among the Haitians already living in Cayenne. Starting in 1995, shanty towns like Balata appeared on the outskirts of the urban area. Many of the settlers either bought or rented the land. By 2005, only a third of the residents were squatting. The favourable position at the junction of two main roads, triggered suburbanisation in the area. Sainte-Rose-de-Lima, French Guiana
Sainte-Rose-de-Lima is a village of Lokono Amerindians in the commune of Matoury in French Guiana. The village is located on the RN2 near Cayenne – Félix Eboué Airport. It is the largest settlement of Lokono in French Guiana. History In 1951, Lokono from Suriname started to migrate to French Guiana mainly for economic reasons. The main villages of origin were Alfonsdorp near the Maroni River, and Matta in the Para District. At first they settled in the existing Lokono village of Balaté near Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. Later, some migrated to Iracoubo and Cayenne often settling among the Kalina people. On 13 April 1969, a small plane carrying four people took off from Cayenne – Félix Eboué Airport in bad weather. It struck the tree tops, and crashed in the rainforest. There were no survivors. In order to prevent future accidents, the rainforest in front of the runaway was cleared. Cayenne – Félix Eboué Airport (french: link=no, Aéroport de Cayenne – Félix Eboué, ) is French Guiana's main international airport. It is located near the commune of Matoury, southwest of French Guiana's capital city of Cayenne. It is managed by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of French Guiana (CCI Guyane). Air Guyane Express has its headquarters on the airport property. History The first airfield at Cayenne, called "Gallion," was built in 1943 in ten months by the U.S. Army Air Corps as a base allowing bombers to reach Africa. Though quickly abandoned upon the completion of the new airport, it can still be found very close to the aerodrome. The new airport was first given the name "Rochambeau" in reference to Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau, commander-in-chief of the French troops in the American Revolutionary War. Macouria
Macouria is a commune of French Guiana located midway between Cayenne and Kourou, an overseas region and department of France located in South America. The seat of the commune is the settlement of Tonate, and so the commune is also known unofficially as Macouria-Tonate. The French Guiana Zoo is located in the commune. Roura is a commune of French Guiana, an overseas region and department of France located in South America. The city of Roura is bordered by Matoury and Montsinéry-Tonnegrande in the North, Kourou and Saint-Elie in the North West and West, and finally by Régina in the South and East. History The town of Roura was founded in 1675 by Jesuits. In 1786, Marquis de Lafayette attempted an early emancipation of the slaves by allowing small scale agriculture on the savanna ''Gabriel'' near Roury.
