Maldives–Sri Lanka Relations
Maldives–Sri Lanka relations, or official and economic relations between the neighbouring Indian Ocean countries of the Maldives and Sri Lanka, have been positive since the Maldives became independent in 1965. The Maldives first established a mission in Sri Lanka (then the Dominion of Ceylon) in July 1965, and today has a High Commission in Colombo. Sri Lanka has a High Commission in Malé. Both countries were founding members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in December 1985. History The earliest settlers in the Maldives were probably from southern India. Indo-European speakers followed them from Sri Lanka in the fourth and fifth centuries BC. In the 12th century AD, sailors from East Africa and Arab countries came to the islands. The Indian Ocean is the third-largest of the world's five oceanic divisions, covering or ~19.8% of the water on Earth's surface. Ultra Fast Attack Craft
The Ultra Fast Attack Craft, commonly known as the Colombo class, is a Sri Lankan ultra high-speed class of patrol boats meant for a variety of naval missions from off-shore coastal patrol missions to high-speed, high-maneuver littoral warfare. The Special Forces Regiment (SF) ( Sinhala: විශේෂ බලකාය ''Visēsha Balakāya''; Tamil: சிறப்பு படைகள் ரெஜிமென்ட்) is a special forces unit of the Sri Lanka Army. Founded in 1986 as a combat tracker team , it was established as a regiment in 1988, and later expanded into a brigade. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom ( dv, ޢަބްދުﷲ ޔާމީން ޢަބްދުލް ޤައްޔޫމް; born 21 May 1959) is a Maldivian politician who was President of the Maldives from 2013 to 2018. Zahiya Zareer, ( born 30 December 1959) is a Maldivian politician and former teacher; she is Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of the Maldives and was formerly High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, after held two ministerial government offices. Career Zareer began work in 1983, working for the Maldivian government. Her first role was as an English language teacher, from which she worked to become the Minister of Education from 2005 to 2008. From 2004 to 2005 she held the post of Minister of Gender, Family Development & Social Security. During her time as Minister for Education, almost half of Maldivian teachers went on strike.
