Maldives–Pakistan relations are the foreign relations between Pakistan and the Maldives. Both countries have Islam as the state religion and are members of both the Commonwealth of Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation as well as members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (S.A.A.R.C.). Economic relations The economic relations with Maldives are minimal due to lack of direct shipping services between Male’ and Karachi. Total trade between the two countries in 2003-04 was just US$2.1 million. In October 2005, the Pakistan-Maldives Joint Economic Commission commenced. Trade and investment Political relations The present building of the People's Majlis, Maldivian Parliament was inaugurated on 1 August 1998, with the presence of Pakistan's then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Kalsoom Nawaz Sharif
Begum Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif ( Punjabi, ur, ; 29 March 1948– 11 September 2018) was a Pakistani politician who had been the first lady of Pakistan for three non-consecutive terms; from 1990 to 1993, 1997 to 1999 and then from 2013 to 2017. She was the President of Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) from 1999 to 2002. Early and personal life Kulsoom was born on 29 March 1948 in Lahore into a Punjabi butt family, to Hafiz Butt. According to other sources, she was born on 22 March 1948. She attended Islamia College and graduated from the Forman Christian College in Lahore. Maldivians In Pakistan
Maldivians in Pakistan are mostly students pursuing degrees and courses across various universities and colleges throughout the country. According to registrations based with the local embassy and Maldivian government records, their numbers are in the hundreds; in addition, some 400-600 students are in the country unregistered. There are an estimated 150 Maldivian students obtaining religious education and instruction in Pakistani Islamic institutions and madrassas. Maldivian diplomats also receive training in Pakistan. General Qamar Javed Bajwa ( ur, ; born 11 November 1960) is a retired Pakistani army general who served as the tenth Chief of the Army Staff of Pakistan from 29 November 2016 to 29 November 2022. Mohamed Nasheed GCSK (; born 17 May 1967) is a Maldivian politician and activist currently serving as the 19th speaker of the People's Majlis since May 2019. A founding member of the Maldivian Democratic Party, he served as President of the Maldives from 2008 until his resignation in 2012. He is the first democratically elected president of the Maldives and the only president to resign from office. Maumoon Abdul Gayoom
Maumoon Abdul Gayoom (; dv, މައުމޫން ޢަބްދުލް ޤައްޔޫމް; born 29 December 1937) is a Maldivian politician and an Islamic scholar who served as the President of Maldives from 1978 to 2008.
