William Lowther (of Swillington, Elder)
Sir William Lowther (c. 1612 – February 1688) was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1660 to 1679. Life Lowther was the son of Sir John Lowther of Lowther Hall and his wife Eleanor Fleming, daughter of Wiliam Fleming of Rydal. In 1660, he was elected Member of Parliament for Pontefract in the Convention Parliament He was re-elected MP for Pontefract in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament. He was knighted on 30 December 1661 and was dwelling at Swillington. Family Lowther married Jane Busfield daughter of William Busfield, merchant of Leeds, Yorkshire, by 1636. Anthony Lowther, Viscount Lowther
Anthony Edward Lowther, Viscount Lowther (24 September 1896 – 6 October 1949) was an England, English courtier and soldier. Early life Anthony Edward Lowther was the eldest son of Lancelot Lowther, 6th Earl of Lonsdale by his first wife, the former Gwendoline Sophia Alice Sheffield (1869–1921). After the death of his mother in 1921, his father remarried to Sybil Beatrix Feetham, the only child of Maj Gen Edward Feetham of Farmwood. His maternal grandparents were the former Priscilla Dumaresq (daughter of Lt. Col. Henry Dumaresq) and Sheffield Baronets, Sir Robert Sheffield, 5th Baronet. His paternal grandparents were Henry Lowther, 3rd Earl of Lonsdale and Countess Emily Lowther (née Emily Susan Caulfeild), the daughter of St George Caulfeild of Donamon Castle of Roscommon, Ireland. Lancelot Lowther, 6th Earl Of Lonsdale
Lancelot Edward Lowther, 6th Earl of Lonsdale, OBE, DL (25 June 1867 – 11 March 1953) was an English peer, the fourth and youngest son of Henry Lowther, 3rd Earl of Lonsdale. Biography Lowther was educated at Malvern College and Magdalene College, Cambridge. At Cambridge, he was a member of the University Pitt Club. On 13 October 1886 Lowther was made lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, The Border Regiment (The Royal Cumberland Militia). Soon thereafter, he was appointed a deputy lieutenant in the counties his family had traditionally dominated, Cumberland (21 November 1891) and Westmorland (26 January 1892). In keeping with the family tradition, he enjoyed sports and, by 1905, was a Master of the Drag (drag hunting) and the Deputy Master of the Quorn. During World War I, he served in the Middle East, and after the war received the OBE (3 June 1919) and the Order of the Nile, 4th Class (16 January 1920). Hugh Lowther, 5th Earl Of Lonsdale
Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale, (25 January 1857–13 April 1944) was an English peer and sportsman. Early life Born in 1857, he was the second son of Emily Susan (), daughter of St George Francis Caulfeild of Donamon Castle of Roscommon, Ireland and Henry Lowther, 3rd Earl of Lonsdale. In 1882, he succeeded his brother, St George Lowther, 4th Earl of Lonsdale, and was succeeded in turn by his brother, Lancelot Lowther, 6th Earl of Lonsdale upon his death in 1944. Career Lonsdale inherited enormous wealth derived from his father's Cumberland coalmines, and owned of land. He had residences at Lowther Castle, at Whitehaven Castle, Barleythorpe and Carlton House Terrace, London. St George Lowther, 4th Earl Of Lonsdale
St George Henry Lowther, 4th Earl of Lonsdale (4 October 1855 – 8 February 1882) was a British nobleman, the eldest son of Henry Lowther, 3rd Earl of Lonsdale and Emily Caulfeild. From 1872 until his succession to the earldom in 1876, he was styled Viscount Lowther.''Burke's Peerage, Baronetage and Knightage,'' 100th Edn, London, 1953. Life His racehorse Pilgrimage won both the One Thousand Guineas and the Two Thousand Guineas in 1878. He was a captain in the part-time Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry, and was honorary colonel of the Royal Cumberland Militia. Henry Lowther, 3rd Earl of Lonsdale (27 March 1818 – 15 August 1876) was a British nobleman and Conservative politician. Early life Lowther was born on 27 March 1818. He was the eldest son of Hon. Henry Cecil Lowther and Lady Lucy Sherard. His paternal grandfather was William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale and his maternal grandfather was Philip Sherard, 5th Earl of Harborough. In 1868, he succeeded his uncle William in his Lord Lieutenancies, and in 1872 as Earl of Lonsdale. Career He was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge and in 1841 he joined the 1st Life Guards. Henry Cecil Lowther
Colonel Henry Cecil Lowther, DL, JP (27 July 1790 – 6 December 1867) was an English Conservative politician and an amateur cricketer who played first-class cricket from 1819 to 1843. His long service in the House of Commons saw him become the Father of the House. Early life Lowther was born on 27 July 1790 at Lowther Castle, Westmorland. Colonel Claude William Henry Lowther (1870 – 16 June 1929) was an English Conservative politician. Early life Lowther was the only son of Capt. Francis William Lowther and Louise Beatrice de Fonblanque; Francis William was the illegitimate son of the Earl of Lonsdale and Emilia Cressotti, an Italian opera singer, and received £125,000 on the Earl's death. His sister was the tennis player Toupie Lowther, whom he encouraged to form an all-female unit supporting the French Army during the First World War. He was educated at Rugby School and had a brief diplomatic career as honorary attaché at Madrid from 1894. Career He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry of the British Army on 17 May 1899. William Lowther, 2nd Earl of Lonsdale, PC, FRS (21 July 1787 – 4 March 1872), styled Viscount Lowther between 1807 and 1844, was a British Tory politician. Background Lonsdale was the eldest son of William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale, and Lady Augusta, daughter of John Fane, 9th Earl of Westmorland. Henry Lowther was his younger brother. He was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. Political career Lonsdale was returned to parliament for Cockermouth in 1808, a seat he held until 1813, and later represented Westmorland between 1813 and 1831 and 1832 and 1841, Dunwich in 1832 and West Cumberland between 1832 and 1833. Sir William Lowther, 1st Baronet (10 July 1707 – 15 June 1788) was an English landowner and curate, of Little Preston, Yorkshire. The eldest son of Christopher Lowther (d. 1718) and grandson of Sir William Lowther, he went to school in Kirkleatham before entering Trinity College, Cambridge in 1726. Ordained priest in 1734, he became rector of Swillington from 1757 to 1788. On 31 August 1753, he married Anne Zouch (d. 1759), sister of Thomas Zouch. They had two sons, each of whom married a daughter of John Fane, 9th Earl of Westmorland: *William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale (1757–1844) * Sir John Lowther, 1st Baronet (1759–1844) In 1754, he bought Alverthorpe Hall from his cousin, Thomas Maude.
