Liverpool Plains Shire
Liverpool Plains Shire is a local government area located in the North West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia. The Shire was formed on 17 March 2004 by the amalgamation of Quirindi Shire with parts of Parry, Murrurundi and Gunnedah shires. The Mayor of Liverpool Plains Shire Council is Cr. Doug Hawkins OAM. Main towns The main town and Council seat is located in Quirindi. Other towns and villages in the Shire include Ardglen, Blackville, Caroona, Currabubula, Premer, Spring Ridge, Wallabadah, Werris Creek, and Willow Tree. Quirindi
Quirindi ( or ) is a small town on the North West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia, in Liverpool Plains Shire. At the , Quirindi had a population of 3,444. It is the nearest link to Gunnedah to the west and Tamworth to the north. The local economy is based on agriculture, with broadacre farming dominant on the black soil plains to the west and livestock grazing in the hilly eastern part of the district. The town is on the Kamilaroi Highway northwest of its junction with the New England Highway at Willow Tree. History The indigenous Gamilaroi people lived in the area for many thousands of years. The name Quirindi comes from the Gamilaraay language, with a number of meanings having been attributed it, which include "nest in the hills", "place where fish breed" and "dead tree on mountain top". Ardglen, New South Wales
Ardglen is a village on the Main North railway line and close to the New England Highway on the North West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia. History A railway station was opened there on 13 August 1877 as Doughboy Hollow, which was later renamed Ardglen on 29 June 1893. No trace of the railway station now exists. The significant 488 metre single-track rail tunnel, '' Ardglen Tunnel'', passes through the Liverpool Range south of the former rail station site. It is one of the very few remaining single-track tunnels in use. This tunnel is at the summit of the line at the watershed, with ruling grades of 1 in 40 approaching in both directions. Werris Creek Railway Station
Werris Creek railway station is a heritage-listed railway station located at the junction of the Main Northern, Mungindi and Binnaway–Werris Creek lines in Werris Creek in the Liverpool Plains Shire local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The station serves the town of Werris Creek and was built between 1877 and 1880. The station is also known as Werris Creek Railway Station, yard group and movable relics. The property was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The story of the railway line across Parry Shire began in the early 1870s when the construction of the Great Northern Line had stalled at the foot of the Liverpool Plains. From 1876 the line pressed on over the range and down onto the plains below. East Warrah Woolshed is a heritage-listed shearing shed at Merriwa-Murrurundi Road, Warrah Creek, Liverpool Plains Shire, New South Wales, Australia. Quirindi Railway Station
Quirindi railway station is a heritage-listed railway station located on the Main Northern line in Quirindi in the Liverpool Plains Shire local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The station serves the town of Quirindi and opened on 13 August 1877 when the line was extended from Murrurundi. It was the terminus of the line until it was extended to West Tamworth on 14 October 1878. It is also known as Quirindi Railway Station group. The railway station was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. Willow Tree, New South Wales
Willow Tree is a village composed of about 308 people, located in New South Wales, Australia. It is situated in the Liverpool Plains, 14 kilometres south of Quirindi, New South Wales, Quirindi near the junction of the Kamilaroi Highway, Kamilaroi and New England Highways. The town itself is small but the farms extend southwest out to the township of Warrah, New South Wales, Warrah. It is a service centre to the rural areas of Warrah and Mount Parry. History Willow Tree is located at the north-eastern corner of the enormous Warrah grant which was made out to the Australian Agricultural Company in 1833. An inn was established on the future town site, at the junction of the roads north to Quirindi and north-east to Wallabadah in the mid-19th century. Werris Creek
Werris Creek is a small town in New South Wales, Australia, near Tamworth, in Liverpool Plains Shire. It is north of Quirindi and is at the junction of the Main North railway line to Armidale and Moree. At the 2011 census, Werris Creek had a population of 1,437. History The area was originally occupied by the Gamilaraay people. "Werris" appears to derive from an Aboriginal word first written as "Weia Weia", but the exact meaning is not known. There is a similar aboriginal word pronounced "werai", which means "look out", which might be related, because there are prominent hills in the area. In earlier years, Werris was written in a variety of ways, including Werres, Werries and Weery's. Wallabadah is a town and locality in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia. The town is located 55 kilometres south of Tamworth on the New England Highway and is in the Liverpool Plains Shire. At the , Wallabadah had a population of 382. History The Wallabadah region was originally known as "Thalababuri" by the Kamilaroi Aboriginal people. Wallabadah's name was derived from an aboriginal word meaning "stone".
