Uruguay (; ), officially the Oriental Republic of Uruguay ( es, República Oriental del Uruguay), is a country in South America. Laguna Garzón
Laguna José Ignacio (José Ignacio Lagoon) is a body of water located between Maldonado Department and Rocha Department, Uruguay. A sandbank separates it from the Atlantic Ocean. This coastal lagoon was previously served by a small 2-vehicle ferry that required daylight and good weather to operate; in December 2015, the Laguna Garzón Bridge on Route 10 was opened to vehicular traffic, providing a crossing for pedestrians and up to approximately 1,000 vehicles a day. A birdwatching site, it was designated part of the National System of Protected Areas in Uruguay. Laguna De Rocha
Laguna de Rocha (Rocha Lagoon) is an important body of water located in Rocha Department, Uruguay. The lagoon and its surroundings were declared a protected area in 1977. On October 31, 1945, a Latecoere 631 (F-BANT) of Air France made an emergency landing in Laguna da Rocha after the no. 3 engine propeller separated and sliced a 3 meter hole into the fuselage, killing 2 passengers and starting a small fire. Laguna Del Sauce
Laguna del Sauce (Lagoon of the Willow) is a subtropical shallow lake and the largest water body in the Maldonado Department of Uruguay. It is located west of Punta del Este. The lake is the only freshwater ecosystem in the country classified for drinking water as its principal use. Originally a coastal lagoon, the lake was damned for military purposes in 1947. The closed ecosystem makes the lake prone to eutrophication, and has had regular algae blooms—one of which, in 2015, included cyanobacteria that disrupted water supplies. Geography The lagoon covers and is long and wide. The maximum depth of the lake is five meters. The lake is part of an interconnected lake system which include Laguna de los Cisnes (205 ha) and Laguna del Potrero (411 ha). Merín Lake
Lagoon Mirim (Portuguese, ) or Merín (Spanish, ) is a large estuarine lagoon which extends from southern Rio Grande do Sul state in Brazil into eastern Uruguay. Lagoa Mirim is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a sandy, partially barren isthmus. The Jaguarão/Yaguarón, Tacuarí and Cebollatí Rivers empty into Lagoon Mirim, while the São Gonçalo Channel connects it with Lagoa dos Patos to the north. Location Lagoon Mirim is about long by wide and in area. It is more irregular in outline than its larger neighbor to the north, Lagoa dos Patos, and discharges into the latter through São Gonçalo Channel, which is navigable by small boats. Water Resources Management In Uruguay
The water resources management system in Uruguay has been influenced by the general sense of water as an abundant resource in the country. Average annual rainfall is 1,182 mm, representing a contribution of 210 km3 annually throughout its territory. In 2002, the per capita renewable water resources was 41,065 cubic meters, way above the world average 8,467 m3 in 2006. Uruguay also shares one of the largest groundwater reserves in the world, the Guarani Aquifer, with Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay. The Guarani aquifer covers 1,200,000 square kilometers and has a storage capacity of 40,000 km3. The institutional framework for water resources management consists of sectoral governmental agencies at the national and regional level.
