Iron Range is a coastal locality in the Shire of Cook, Queensland, Australia. In the , Iron Range had a population of 14 people. The town of Portland Road is on a north-east headland in the locality (). Geography Iron Range is on the north-east coast of the Cape York Peninsula. Weymouth Bay is off the north-eastern coast of locality. All of the locality of Iron Range is occupied by the Kutini Payamu National Park (formerly the Iron Range National Park). History The town of Portland Road is named after the harbour of the same name. The harbour first appeared on an 1897 British Admiralty Chart. Cooktown, Queensland
Cooktown is a coastal town and locality in the Shire of Cook, Queensland, Australia. Cooktown is at the mouth of the Endeavour River, on Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland where James Cook beached his ship, the Endeavour, for repairs in 1770. Both the town and Mount Cook (431 metres or 1,415 feet) which rises up behind the town were named after James Cook. Weymouth Bay, Queensland
Weymouth Bay is a bay in North Queensland, Australia. The bay opens onto the Coral Sea, part of the South Pacific Ocean. The Pascoe River flows into the bay. To the south of the bay is the Kutini-Payamu National Park. It was one of the Australian places named by James Cook during his voyage in HMS Endeavour northwards along the east coast in 1770; he named it on Friday 17 August 1770. Gordon's Mine And Mill
Gordon's Mine and Mill is a heritage-listed mining, mine at Iron Range, Queensland, Iron Range, Shire of Cook, Queensland, Australia. It was built from to 1950s. It is also known as Iron Range Mine and Mill. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 13 December 2002. History In early 1934, Jack Gordon prospected the Iron Range locality from the Packers Creek field near Portland Roads. In June 1934, he followed a gold trail up a tributary of Gordon Creek, a branch of the Claudie River, and discovered what was later called the Iron Range Reef. Within two years, the region was a hive of activity with 45 men working along an strip. Although the original ore was shipped and railed to the Venus Battery, Venus battery at Charters Towers for treatment, the Iron Range mill was in full operation by November 1936 after a Huntington mill was erected by Jack Gordon at the mine following great difficulties in transportation. Edmund Kennedy
Edmund Besley Court Kennedy J. P. (5 September 1818 – December 1848) was an explorer in Australia in the mid nineteenth century. He was the Assistant-Surveyor of New South Wales, working with Sir Thomas Mitchell. Kennedy explored the interior of Queensland and northern New South Wales, including the Thomson River, the Barcoo River, Cooper Creek, and Cape York Peninsula. He died in December 1848 after being speared by Aboriginal Australians in far north Queensland near Cape York. Early life Kennedy was born on 5 September 1818 on Guernsey in the Channel Islands to Colonel Thomas Kennedy (British Army) and Mary Ann (Smith) Kennedy. He was the sixth born of nine children, comprising five boys and four girls. Kennedy was educated at Elizabeth College Guernsey, and expressed an early interest in surveying. Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) is a National Park located in Queensland, Australia, northwest of Brisbane and east of Weipa in the Cape York Peninsula, Queensland.
