International Polo Cup
The International Polo Cup, also called the Newport Cup and the Westchester Cup, is a trophy in polo that was created in 1876 and was played for by teams from the United States and United Kingdom. The match has varied in length over the years from a single game to the best of three games. In 1886 the two nations decided to make the polo match a continuing competition. A total of 12 matches were conducted between 1886 and 1939 between the two countries. The tournament was suspended during World War II and, due to changing times and interests, not revived until 1992. The last match was held on July 28, 2013 at Guards Polo Club. History The cup was first awarded to the team of Capt.John Henry Watson in 1876* in Newport, Rhode Island. Patteson Womersley Nickalls
Patteson Womersley Nickalls (23 January 1877 – 10 September 1946), was an English polo player who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics for Great Britain. Biography Nickalls was born on 23 January 1877 at North Weald, Essex, the son of Sir Patteson Nickalls, a stockbroker, and his wife Florence. He was educated at Rugby School. There he was in the cricket XI from 1892 to 1894 and in the rugby XV in 1893. He went to New College, Oxford, played in the Varsity Match for the Oxford University Polo Club in 1895-6-7 and graduated with a BA in 1897. In 1900, he was gazetted to the Durham Light Infantry and served in the Second Anglo-Boer War. He took part in the Relief of Ladysmith and the Battle of Colenso. He retired from the army in 1901 and became a member of the London Stock Exchange. Nickalls played polo for England in the 1902 International Polo Cup matches. Cecil Patteson Nickalls
Cecil Patteson Nickalls, D.S.O. (14 October 1877 – 7 April 1925) was a Colonel in the Royal Field Artillery. He was a champion polo player, and a champion rugby player, who took his own life with a gun on 7 April 1925. Early life He was born on 14 October 1877 in Kent, England to Sir Patteson Nickalls. His siblings were, Patteson Womersley Nickalls and Morres Nickalls. He was educated at Rugby School. Career In the 1890s he played cricket. He scored 109 at Lord's Cricket Ground against Marlborough for Rugby in 1894. Foxhall Parker Keene (December 18, 1867 – September 25, 1941) was an American thoroughbred race horse owner and breeder, a world and Olympic gold medallist in polo and an amateur tennis player. He was rated the best all-around polo player in the United States for eight consecutive years, a golfer who competed in the U.S. Open, and a pioneer racecar driver who vied for the Gordon Bennett Cup.
