Hildesheim (district)
Hildesheim is a district (''Landkreis'') in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is bounded by (from the north and clockwise) the districts of Hanover, Peine, Wolfenbüttel, Goslar, Northeim, Holzminden and Hamelin-Pyrmont. History In 1885 the Prussian government established districts within the Province of Hanover. The present territory of the district was occupied by four districts: Hildesheim, Alfeld, Gronau and Marienburg. In 1932 the district of Gronau joined Alfeld, and the number of districts was reduced to three. When the state of Lower Saxony was founded in 1946, the districts were reorganised: Hildesheim became an urban district, the remaining district of Hildesheim and Marienburg were merged to the new district of Hildesheim-Marienburg. The district of Alfeld remained in its former borders. Hildesheim
Hildesheim (; nds, Hilmessen, Hilmssen; la, Hildesia) is a city in Lower Saxony, Germany with 101,693 inhabitants. It is in the district of Hildesheim, about southeast of Hanover on the banks of the Innerste River, a small tributary of the Leine River. The Holy Roman Emperor Louis the Pious founded the Bishopric of Hildesheim in 815 and created the first settlement with a chapel on the so called ''Domhügel''. Hildesheim is situated on autobahn route 7, and hence is at the connection point of the North (Hamburg and beyond) with the South of Europe. With the Hildesheim Cathedral and the St. Michael's Church, Hildesheim became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. In 2015 the city and the diocese celebrated their 1200th anniversary. Sieben Berge
The Sieben Berge ("Seven Hills") are a ridge of hills up to in the Lower Saxon Hills in the district of Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, Germany. Together with the Vorberge and the Sackwald the Sieben Berge belong to the geological formation of the Sackmulde. They are famous as a result of the fairy tale, Snow White. Geography The Sieben Berge ridge is located in the east of the Leine Uplands, a northern part of the Lower Saxon Hills. It lies between Gronau on the Leine to the north, Sibbesse to the northeast and Alfeld to the south. The Sieben Berge are surrounded by the hills of the Hildesheim Forest to the northeast, the Sauberge to the east-northeast, the Vorberge to the east and the Sackwald to the southeast. To the west runs the valley of the Leine, behind which rises the Ith ridge. Topographically it transitions to the Vorberge almost seamlessly. Giesen is a village and a municipality in the district of Hildesheim, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 6 km northwest of Hildesheim, and 22 km southeast of Hanover. Freden
Freden is a village and a municipality in the Hildesheim (district), district of Hildesheim, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the river Leine, approx. 25 km south of Hildesheim. Diekholzen
Diekholzen is a village and a municipality in the district of Hildesheim, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 6 km southwest of Hildesheim on the Beuster, a tributary of the Innerste. History In 1974, the former villages of Diekholzen, Söhre, Barienrode and Egenstedt were united to form the municipality of Diekholzen. Each village has its own history and various sights. Most of the inhabitants are Roman Catholics. The largest village of the municipality is Diekholzen with an administration building, a school, a hospital, several shops, a supermarket, some restaurants and a hotel. Algermissen
Algermissen is a village and a municipality in the district of Hildesheim, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 12 km north of Hildesheim, and 20 km southeast of Hanover. The name of the town originates from a prominent German family who lived in the area until the Revolutions of 1848—the Algermissens were of the revolutionary party and were driven from Germany when the revolution was suppressed. Sarstedt is a town in the district of Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, Germany. It has approximately 18,500 inhabitants. Sarstedt is situated 20 km south of Hanover and 10 km north of Hildesheim. Elze
Elze () is a town in the district of Hildesheim, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the river Leine, approximately west of Hildesheim. The municipality of Elze also comprises the villages of ''Esbeck, Mehle, Sehlde, Sorsum, Wittenburg'' and ''Wülfingen''. Elze is one of the oldest settlement in the area, as its name stems from la, aula caesaris, a castle of Charlemagne which he had established about 800 in the Saxon estates after his victory over duke Widukind in the Saxon Wars. The emperor also founded a missionary diocese here, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul which became the origin of the Bishopric of Hildesheim. Bockenem (; Eastphalian: ''Bokeln'') is a town in the district of Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, Germany that was founded in 1154. It is located on the German Timber-Frame Road. Bad Salzdetfurth
is a town on the banks of the River Lamme in the district of Hildesheim, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Thousand-year Rose
The Thousand-year Rose (German: ''Tausendjähriger Rosenstock'', literally: Thousand-year-old Rosebush), also known as the Rose of Hildesheim, grows on the apse of the Hildesheim Cathedral, a Catholic cathedral in Hildesheim, Germany, that is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The cathedral and the adjacent St. Michael's Church have been on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 1985. The rose that climbs on the wall of the cathedral's apse is believed to be the oldest living rose in the world. A wild dog rose (''Rosa canina''), it grows against the eastern apse of the cathedral, which is around high and wide. The rose bush reaches a height of around and documentation verifies its age at around 700 years.
