Gulu University Academics
Gulu is a city in the Northern Region of Uganda. It is the commercial and administrative centre of Gulu District. The coordinates of the city of Gulu are 2°46'54.0"N 32°17'57.0"E. The distance from Gulu to Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city, is approximately by road. Gulu is served by Gulu Airport. History During the British Bagool rule in the 18th and 19th centuries, northern Uganda was less developed compared to the rest of the country. The people were conscripted into the army and the police. Many were sent to fight in the first and second World Wars. In the 1960s, many Sudanese, Rwandese, and Congolese refugees settled in the city. The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) under the leadership of Joseph Kony sprang up in the 1990s after Auma/Lakwena went to Kenya. The LRA became increasingly violent in Gulu and surrounding communities. Internally Displaced Person
An internally displaced person (IDP) is someone who is forced to leave their home but who remains within their country's borders. They are often referred to as refugees, although they do not fall within the legal definitions of a refugee. At the end of 2014, it was estimated there were 38.2 million IDPs worldwide, the highest level since 1989, the first year for which global statistics on IDPs are available. Lira, Uganda
Lira is a city in the Northern Region, Uganda, Northern Region of Uganda. It is the main municipal, administrative, and commercial centre of Lira District. History Lira was one of the last towns in Uganda held by loyalists of Idi Amin during the Uganda–Tanzania War (1978–1979). A force consisting of the Tanzania People's Defence Force's 201st Brigade and the Uganda National Liberation Front's Kikosi Maalum attacked Lira on 15 May 1979, ousting the Amin loyalists after a Battle of Lira, short battle. The clash at Lira was the last important battle of the Uganda–Tanzania War, as the remnants of Amin's army completely disintegrated thereafter. Lira University
Lira University (LU) is a university in Uganda. It is one of the eleven public universities and degree-awarding institutions in the country. Location The university campus is located on approximately of land, about , by road, northwest of downtown, Lira off of the Lira–Kamdini Road. The coordinates of the university campus are 2°15'04.0"N, 32°49'16.0"E (Latitude:2.251111; Longitude:32.821111). History The university first opened in August 2012 with 100 students. At that time, the institution was a constituent college of Gulu University and was known as Gulu University Constituent College Lira. It was also referred to as Lira University College.
