Mauritius ( ; french: Maurice, link=no ; mfe, label=Mauritian Creole, Moris ), officially the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about off the southeast coast of the African continent, east of Madagascar. Dodo
The dodo (''Raphus cucullatus'') is an extinct flightless bird that was endemic to the island of Mauritius, which is east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The dodo's closest genetic relative was the also-extinct Rodrigues solitaire. The two formed the subfamily Raphinae, a clade of extinct flightless birds that were a part of the family which includes pigeons and doves. The closest living relative of the dodo is the Nicobar pigeon. A white dodo was once thought to have existed on the nearby island of Réunion, but it is now believed that this assumption was merely confusion based on the also-extinct Réunion ibis and paintings of white dodos. Subfossil remains show the dodo was about tall and may have weighed in the wild. The dodo's appearance in life is evidenced only by drawings, paintings, and written accounts from the 17th century. The Islets of Mauritius includes nearly a hundred tiny islets and rocks scattered around the coast of Mauritius as well as Rodrigues. ÃŽle aux Cerfs ÃŽle aux Cerfs (French for ''deer island'') is an island near the east coast of the island of Mauritius. Nowadays there are no more deer on this island, but the island does have a luxury golf course. The only method of access is by ferry from Trou d'Eau Douce or by specific speed boats or catamarans. The part of the ocean surrounding the islet is rather shallow, so you can walk for more than 100 meters in the ocean and the water won't cover you. Avocaré Island (Avoquer, L'Avocaire) is an island located in the Cargados Carajos shoals, a group of outer islands of Mauritius, and one of the Thirteen Islands of St Brandon held under permanent lease since 1901 and under permanent grant since 2008 by the Raphael Fishing Company. The Cargados Carajos shoals are unique in possessing the largest algal ridge in the Indian Ocean. Île Raphael within the Madagascar Hotspot in the Indian Ocean. (called after Mme. Veuve Raphaël -1820s ) is an island in the Cargados Carajos shoals ( Saint Brandon), a group of thirty outer islands of Mauritius. Île Raphael is the operational Headquarters of the thirteen islands of St Brandon managed by Raphaël Fishing Company which are owned under a Permanent Grant. Raphael Fishing Company currently facilitates certain specific buildings on one of the thirteen permanently granted islands, Île Raphael, to the Mauritius National Coast Guard and to the Mauritius Meteorological Services.
