Eastern Orthodoxy in Azerbaijan is the main Christian and the second largest religious group in the Republic of Azerbaijan (after Islam). According to statistics, the Eastern Orthodox, or Byzantine tradition in Azerbaijan is 2.3% (209.7 thousand people). The territory of Azerbaijan is in the jurisdiction of the Baku-Azerbaijan Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. Ingiloy People
Ingiloys ( az, İngiloylar; ka, ინგილოები) are an ethnographic subgroup of Georgians who speak the Ingiloy dialect of Georgian. Ingiloys are indigenous to Saingilo (formerly known as Hereti), a cultural and historical region in northwestern Azerbaijan. History According to traditional accounts, the name of the Heretians (that is of Ingiloys) originates from the legendary patriarch "Heros", the son of Thargamos, who founded the city of Hereti (later known as Khoranta) at the Alazani River. With the decline of Caucasian Albania, the area was gradually incorporated into the Iberian kingdom, forming one of its duchies (saeristavo). Qakh District
Qakh District ( az, Qax rayonu; ka, კახის რაიონი, K′akhis raioni; Tsakhur: Къахын район) is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the north of the country and belongs to the Shaki-Zagatala Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Zagatala, Shaki, Samukh, Yevlakh, and the Russian Republic of Dagestan. Its capital and largest city is Qakh. As of 2020, the district had a population of 57,200. Geography The region is dominated by hot and subtropical climate. However mountainous areas are rather cold. St George's Church, Qakh
The St George's Church ( ka, კახის წმინდა გიორგის ეკლესია) is a Georgian Orthodox Church located in the village of Gakh-Inguila in the Qakh district, 30 metres away from the left bank of the Kakistskali river, northwestern Azerbaijan, on the border with Georgia, where the Ingiloy Georgians live compactly (about 7,500 people). The church was destroyed as a result of Shah Abbas I's invasions of Georgia, but later was reconstructed on the site of an old church in the first half of the 18th century. Its latest renovation by Ivan-Baba Belughashvili dates form the late 19th century. Currently, church is the only active Georgian Orthodox church in Azerbaijan. Khachmaz (city)
Khachmaz ( az, Xaçmaz) is a town in the Khachmaz District of Azerbaijan. Etymology Modern historians believe that the name Khachmaz derives from ''Khachmataki'' tribe of Huns, which transformed into ''Khacmaz'' in the middle of 7th century. In the second middle of the 7th century, part of the tribe migrated to the territory of the current Oghuz district and constructed the settlement and named Khachmar fortress. Economy The economy of Khachmaz is partially agricultural, partially tourist-based, with some industries in operation. Tourism Khachmaz is considered a popular tourist destination, especially due to the Nabran municipality. Gadabay District ( az, Gədəbəy rayonu) is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the west of the country and belongs to the Gazakh-Tovuz Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Dashkasan, Shamkir, Tovuz, and the Gegharkunik and Tavush provinces of Armenia. Lankaran ( az, Lənkəran, ) is a city in Azerbaijan, on the coast of the Caspian Sea, near the southern border with Iran. As of 2021, the city had a population of 89,300. It is next to, but independent of, Lankaran District. The city forms a distinct first-order division of Azerbaijan. Etymology The old form of the name was "Langarkanan" that in Persian means "the place of pulling up the anchor(s)" : "Langar" (, anchor) + "kan" (, to pull) + "an"(, suffix of places). Shamakhi
Shamakhi ( az, Şamaxı, ) is a city in Azerbaijan and the administrative centre of the Shamakhi District. The city's estimated population was 31,704. It is famous for its traditional dancers, the Shamakhi Dancers, and also for perhaps giving its name to the Soumak rugs. Eleven major earthquakes have rocked Shamakhi but through multiple reconstructions, it maintained its role as the economic and administrative capital of Shirvan and one of the key towns on the Silk Road.
