East Sussex County Council
East Sussex County Council is the local authority for the non-metropolitan county of East Sussex. East Sussex is divided into five local government districts. Three are larger, rural, districts (from west to east: Lewes; Wealden; and Rother). The other two, Eastbourne and Hastings, are mainly urban areas. The rural districts are subdivided into civil parishes. The County Council meets at East Sussex County Hall, the authority's headquarters; there are a number of other administrative buildings located throughout the county. History Sussex was historically divided into six sub-divisions known as rapes. From the 12th century the three eastern rapes and the three western rapes had separate quarter sessions: the county town of the three eastern rapes was Lewes. Simon Gerard Kirby (born 22 December 1964), also known as Simon Radford-Kirby, is a British politician. A member of the Conservative Party, he was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Brighton Kemptown in 2010. In 2016, he was appointed Economic Secretary to the Treasury, where he held responsibility for financial services, unofficially known as the City Minister. He lost his seat at the 2017 general election. Early life and career Kirby was born in Hastings, Sussex, in 1964. He attended Chantry Infants School, Sandown Primary School and Hastings Grammar School. He has a BSc(Hons) degree in mathematical modelling from the Open University and studied operational research at the London School of Economics. The 2017 East Sussex County Council election took place on 4 May 2017 as part of the 2017 local elections in the United Kingdom. All councillors were to be elected from electoral divisions by first-past-the-post voting for a four-year term of office. Boundary changes to the electoral divisions will take effect at this election after a review of the county by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England. The East Sussex County Council election, 2013 took place on 2 May 2013 as part of the 2013 United Kingdom local elections. All 49 councillors of East Sussex County Council were elected from 44 electoral divisions, which return either one or two councillors each by first-past-the-post voting for a four-year term of office.
