Devon County Council Elections
Local elections in Devon are held every four years in order to vote for councillors on Devon County Council. There are a total of 62 councillors on the council. Since 1998, Plymouth and Torbay have been unitary authorities, making them independent of Devon County Council. Political control The county council was established in 1889. The council's functions and territory were reformed under the Local Government Act 1972. The first election following those reforms was held in 1973, with the council assuming its altered powers on 1 April 1974. A councillor is an elected representative for a local government council in some countries. Exeter City Council
Exeter City Council is the council and local government of the city of Exeter, Devon. History Proposed unitary authority status The government proposed that the city should become an independent unitary authority within Devon, much like neighbouring Plymouth and Torbay. The statutory orders to set up the unitary authority were passed in Parliament and a new unitary city council was due to start in Exeter on 1 April 2011. However, following the 2010 general election the new government announced in May 2010 that the reorganisation would be blocked. Boundaries The Local Government Boundary Commission for England published its final recommendations in September 2015 for changes to the wards in Exeter. The aim was to reduce the city's high levels in electoral inequality. The number of wards was reduced to 13; each electing three councillors for a total of 39. Heavitree And Whipton Barton
Heavitree is a historic village and parish situated formerly outside the walls of the City of Exeter in Devon, England, and is today an eastern district of that city. It was formerly the first significant village outside the city on the road to London. It was the birthplace of Thomas Bodley, and Richard Hooker, and from the 16th century to 1818 was a site for executions within what is now the car park of the St Luke's Campus of the University of Exeter. History The name appears in Domesday Book as ''Hevetrowa'' or ''Hevetrove'', and in a document of c.1130 as ''Hefatriwe''. Its derivation is uncertain, but because of the known execution site at Livery Dole, it is thought most likely to derive from ''heafod–treow'' (old English for "head tree"), which refers to a tree on which the heads of criminals were placed, though an alternative explanation put forward by W. Yealmpton
Yealmpton () is a village and civil parish in the English county of Devon. It is located in the South Hams on the A379 Plymouth to Kingsbridge road and is about from Plymouth. Its name derives from the River Yealm that flows through the village. At the 2001 census, it had a population of 1,923, falling to 1,677 at the 2011 census. There is an electoral ward of the same name. The population of this ward in 2011 was 2,049. Yealmpton is home to a 400-year-old stone cottage, where it is said a version of the famous rhyme Old Mother Hubbard was written. It is also the site of Kitley Caves, including the now closed Kitley Show Cave, where green marble was quarried; there is an arch of it in the British Museum. An election to Devon County Council took place on 2 May 2013 as part of the 2013 United Kingdom local elections. 62 councillors were elected from electoral divisions which returned one county councillor each by first-past-the-post voting for a four-year term of office. The electoral divisions were the same as those used at the previous election in 2009. No elections were held in Plymouth and Torbay, which are unitary authorities outside the area covered by the County Council.
