Davenport, Nebraska
Davenport is a village in Thayer County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 321 at the 2020 census. History In 1872, the village was platted by the Nebraska Land and Town Company, and the St. Joseph and Denver City railroad line (later taken over by Union Pacific) was built through the site of village. It was named after Davenport, Iowa. In 1887, the village was officially incorporated. In 1888, North Western Railroad also built a line through the village. Two railroad lines with passenger and freight service brought much business to the village and helped support several hotels. The public school was established in 1877. A Methodist Society was organized in 1881, a Church of Christ in 1882, Christ's Lutheran Church in 1892, and St. Peter's Lutheran in 1912. Davenport University is a private university with campuses throughout Michigan and online. It was founded in 1866 by Conrad Swensburg and currently offers associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees; diplomas; and post-grad certification programs in business, technology, health professions, and graduate studies (MBA). Davenport's W.A. Lettinga Main Campus is in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The main campus includes student organizations, residence halls, and athletic programs. History The predecessor to the modern Davenport University was founded in 1866 by Conrad G. Swensburg, a Union Army Veteran who returned to Michigan from the Civil War. Davenport College
Davenport College (colloquially referred to as D'port) is one of the fourteen residential colleges of Yale University. Its buildings were completed in 1933 mainly in the Georgian style but with a gothic façade along York Street. The college was named for John Davenport, who founded Yale's home city of New Haven, Connecticut. An extensive renovation of the college's buildings occurred during the 2004–2005 academic year as part of Yale's comprehensive building renovation project. Davenport College has an unofficial rivalry with adjoining Pierson College. Namesake John Davenport was born in 1597 to draper and Mayor of Coventry Henry Davenport and Winifred Barnaby. Davenport Neck is a peninsula in New Rochelle, New York, extending southwesterly from the mainland into Long Island Sound, and running parallel to the main shore. It divides the city's waterfront into two, with New Rochelle Harbor to the south and southwest, and Echo Bay, to the north and northeast. Glen Island and Neptune Island lie just to the west of the Neck, and Davids and Huckleberry islands lie to the south. The Neck is one of the most important historical localities in the City of New Rochelle. Before white settlements, Siwanoy Indians encamped here, finding an abundant source of fish and wildlife. Davenport Creek is a stream in Cache County, Utah, United States. It is also located within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest and its mouth is about southeast of Avon. The creek rises in the Bear River Mountains (at a point about west of the border with Weber County) and flows briefly southwest. It then turns northwest and runs in that direction for most of its course before emptying into the South Fork Little Bear River at a point immediately west of Utah State Route 162. Davenport, Oklahoma
Davenport is a town in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, United States. As of the 2020 census, the community had 809 residents. History A post office was established March 29, 1892 after the Sac and Fox land run of 1891. However, when a rail line built by the St. Louis and Oklahoma City Railroad was crossed by the line of the Eastern Oklahoma Railway in 1901, the town coalesced around that intersection, and was formally incorporated in 1906. Roads were not neglected; the town managed to get the Ozark Trail Highway through the location in 1916, and this road became the path of U.S. Route 66 through town in 1926. Originally an agricultural center, the town was boosted by nearby oil production in the 1920s, and had six oil companies and three cotton gins in the 1930s.
