Dalzell is a village in Bureau and LaSalle counties in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 663 at the 2020 census, down from 717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ottawa Micropolitan Statistical Area. Dalzell was founded on November 24, 1903 and certified on February 11, 1904. History The coal mine shaft in Dalzell was sunk in 1899 by the Spring Valley Coal Company. The town was originally known as the No. 5 Mine Camp. The company owned the property in and around the town. Later the No. 6 Mine Camp was added. The camps were incorporated on February 11, 1904. The village was named for mining magnate Samuel M. Dalzell, the mine manager from Spring Valley. The mine close in February 1923. A post office called Dalzell has been in operation since 1902. Geography Most of the village lies in Bureau County, although a small portion extends into west central LaSalle County. In the 2000 census, all of Dalzell's 717 residents lived in Bureau County. Dalzell House ( ) is a historic house in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is located to the south of the town, on the north bank of the River Clyde. At its core is a 15th-century tower house, with extensive additions built during the 17th and 19th centuries. In the 1980s the house was restored and divided for sale as eighteen private apartments, while the surrounding Dalzell estate is now owned by North Lanarkshire Council. John Dalzell
John Dalzell (April 19, 1845 – October 2, 1927) was an American attorney and Republican politician who represented his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1887–1913. During the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt, Dalzell acted as an envoy between Roosevelt and Congress, bridging an otherwise combative relationship. He was a constant critic of machine politics, challenging both Matthew Quay and Joseph Gurney Cannon within his party. Biography John Dalzell was born in New York City. Dalzell played in the Israeli Basketball Premier League for 14 seasons from 1983 to 1997. Biography Dalzell grew up in Red Hook, New York. He is 6' 4" (194 cm) tall. He attended Red Hook High School in Red Hook, New York, playing basketball for the Red Hook Raiders in the Ulster County Athletic League. Nicol (or Nicholas) Alexander Dalzell FRSE FLS (21 April 1817 – 18 December 1877) was a Scottish botanist. He was one of the first persons to form the link between forest denudation and the impact of rainfall upon the wider countryside. Life Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, his early education was at the High School in Edinburgh. Dalzell studied divinity (rather than botany) at university, under Rev Thomas Chalmers, and received an M.A. at the University of Edinburgh in 1837. He served as the assistant commissioner of customs, salt and opium in Bombay, India in 1841. In 1862 he became conservator of forests in Bombay and superintendent of the Botanical Gardens in the Bombay Presidency. He published ''The Bombay Flora'' (1861), and other works on Indian botany, and retired in 1870.
