Călan (; ; ) is a town in Hunedoara County, Romania. Twelve villages are administered by the town: Batiz (''Batiz''), Călanu Mic (''Kiskalán''), Grid, Nădăștia de Jos (''Alsónádasd''), Nădăștia de Sus (''Felsőnádasd''), Ohaba Streiului (''Sztrigyohába''), Sâncrai (''Szentkirály''), Sântămăria de Piatră (''Kőboldogfalva''), Strei (''Zeikdorf''; ''Zeykfalva''), Strei-Săcel (''Sztrigyszacsal''), Streisângeorgiu (''Sztrigyszentgyörgy'') and Valea Sângeorgiului (''Szentgyörgyválya''). Geography The town is located in the central part of the county, in the historical Țara Hațegului region. It lies in the Strei River valley, at altitude. Călan Steel Works
The Călan steel works, formerly the Victoria Steel Works Călan ( ro, Combinatul Siderurgic "Victoria" Călan), were a steel mill in the Transylvanian town of Călan, Romania. Begun around 1870, when the area was part of Austria-Hungary, the works underwent a powerful expansion following nationalization in 1948 by the nascent Communist regime, making a vital contribution to the growth of the town. Privatization in the late 1990s proved unsuccessful, and the works were largely abandoned within a decade, leading to economic hardship for Călan. History Beginnings in Austria-Hungary In 1867, the administration of the Brașov Mining and Metallurgy Company (''Kronstädter Bergbau- und Hüttenvereins-Komplexes''), headed by Prince Maximilian Egon I of Fürstenberg, purchased land for a steel works. The Strei ( hu, Sztrigy) is a left tributary of the river Mureș in Transylvania, Romania. The upper reach of the river, upstream of the village of Baru, is also known as ''Râul Petros''. István Szőts
István Szőts (June 30, 1912 – November 6, 1998) was a Hungarian screenwriter and film director. He was born in Szentgyörgyválya (now Valea Sângeorgiului, Călan, Romania), and later moved with his father to Hungary. Szőts studied fine arts at the painting school of the two masters, Aba-Novák Vilmos and Iványi-Grünwald Béla. In 1939 he worked at Hunnia, where he was assistant to director Lajos Zilahy. Activity He is best known for his 1942 film ''People of the Mountains'' which won first prize at the Venice Biennale. Szőts became an assistant director in 1940, and in 1942 made his first feature film ''People of the Mountains''. Although widely acclaimed by critics, it was disapproved of by Hungary's Miklós Horthy, ruling wartime government and Szőts had trouble securing backing for his future projects.Burns p.15 It wasn't until 1947 that he was able to make his second feature film ''Song of the Cornfields''. Gheorghe Barbu
Gheorghe Barbu (born November 3, 1951) is a Romanian politician. A member of the Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L), he represented Hunedoara County in the Chamber of Deputies from 2000 to 2008, and served as Labor Minister in the Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu cabinet from 2004 to 2007. Saint George's Church ( ro, Biserica Sfântu Gheorghe din Streisângeorgiu) is a Romanian Orthodox church in Streisângeorgiu village, Călan town, Hunedoara County, Romania. The Dormition of the Theotokos Church ( ro, Biserica "Adormirea Maicii Domnului" din Strei) is a Romanian Orthodox church in Strei village, Călan town, Hunedoara County, Romania. The first document mentioning the church dates to 1392. Traces of a Roman villa rustica have been discovered on the site. Built of stone at the end of the 13th century to serve a princely court, the church has a bell-tower on the western side, a small nave with a beam ceiling and a rectangular altar. Its exterior was formerly painted; today, interior frescoes survive.
