Cyril Raikes
Cyril Probyn Napier Raikes (1875–1963) was a British Army officer who was awarded the Military Cross in the World War I Mesopotamian campaign flying in the British army's Royal Engineers monitoring the oil pipelines there. He had previously fought in the Boer War. Cyril Raikes was born 12 November 1875 in Swanmore, Hampshire, England the son of General Robert Napier Raikes. He was a Lieutenant in the Boer War, South Africa 1900-1902, gaining a medal and four bars. Before World War I, he developed water services in Egypt. He became the Overseas Director of the British Oxygen Company traveling extensively throughout the Middle East, Europe, South Africa and South America to develop business there. He lived at The Mount, Godalming, Surrey. During the 2nd World War while still working for the British Oxygen Company and staying at the Thatched House Club, St James's, he served as a fire watcher in London, for instance on the top of St Paul's Cathedral. Swanmore
Swanmore is a rural village and civil parish situated in the Meon Valley, Hampshire, England. It is very near to Bishop's Waltham. Swanmore was originally set up to provide homes for workers in local brickworks. As such, the houses in the village are mainly early- and mid-Victorian brick buildings, although there are some older houses, especially in the hamlet of Upper Swanmore 1/4 mile north of the main village. The village continued to thrive after the closure of these brickworks, and at one time had many shops and services in the village, however many of these closed with the advent of easier transport to nearby towns, but Swanmore does still have a village shop, post office, and hairdresser. Hill Place is a grade II listed Georgian country villa located in the parish. Churches The church, St Barnabas was built when the village gained independence in the 19th century, whereas before it was part of the parish of Droxford.
