Cyril Kirkpatrick
Sir Cyril Reginald Sutton Kirkpatrick (1872–1957) was a British civil engineer. Cyril Kirkpatrick was born in London in 1872. Kirkpatrick was Chief Engineer for the Port of London and formed the engineering firm of Kirkpatrick and Partners in 1924. He served as president of the Institution of Civil Engineers between November 1931 and November 1932. Between 1938 and 1942 Kirkpatrick drew many plans to Maryport sea wall and harbour. Kirpatrick's firm was also involved with the construction of concrete caissons for the Mulberry Harbours used following the Normandy Landings during the Second World War. He served as president of the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers in 1950. Kirkpatrick's firm merged with Scott and Wilson to form Scott & Wilson, Kirkpatrick and Partners in 1951. This is a list of presidents of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). The president's role is to represent the institution and to promote the profession to the public. The first president was Thomas Telford who had the office bestowed upon him for life in recognition of his contributions to the civil engineering profession. It became a biennial office with the election of William Cubitt, Sir William Cubitt in 1849 and an annual office with the election of George Berkley (engineer), Sir George Berkley in 1891, which it has remained since. On 18 December 1956 Harold Gourley died just six weeks after assuming the office in November. George Humphreys
Sir George William Humphreys KBE (1863–1945) was a British civil engineer. Humphreys was born in London in 1863. He became a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) on 7 March 1908. He became a member of the council of that institution in November 1917 and served as vice-president from November 1927. Humphreys was elected president of the ICE for the November 1930 to November 1931 session.. After his term he returned to the council as a past-president and remained in that position until October 1937. In 1927 he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Humphreys held a commission as an officer in the Territorial Army's Engineer and Railway Staff Corps, an unpaid unit which provides technical expertise to the British Army. On 18 June 1932 he was promoted from lieutenant colonel to colonel. He received the Efficiency Decoration on 18 March 1937 for his volunteer army service. The Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers was founded in England in 1771. It was the first engineering society to be formed anywhere in the world, and remains the oldest. It was originally known as the Society of Civil Engineers, being renamed following its founder's death.
