Cyprus Olympic Committee
The Cyprus Olympic Committee (COC) ( el, Κυπριακή Ολυμπιακή Επιτροπή) is National Olympic Committee representing the Republic of Cyprus. It is responsible for promoting the Olympic ideals on the island and for ensuring that Cyprus is represented with athletes at the Olympic Games and other multi-sport events. Members of the committee are 31 sports federations, which elect the Executive Council composed of the president and twelve members. The COC organized twice the Games of the Small States of Europe, in 1989 and in 2009. Strovolos
Strovolos ( el, Στρόβολος; tr, Strovolos; hy, Ստրովոլոս) is a municipality of Nicosia District. With a population of nearly 70,000, it is the second most populated municipality in Cyprus, after Limassol, and the most populated municipality of Nicosia District. It was established in 1986. Strovolos is now a town covering divided into six parishes: Chryseleousa, Ayios Demetrios, Apostolos Varnavas kai Ayios Makarios, Ayios Vasilios, National Martyr Kyprianos and Stavros. History The name Strovolos is said to originate from the Greek word "strovilos" (Στρόβιλος) as in "anemo-strovilos" which means whirlwind or twister. Ioannis Frangoudis
Ioannis Frangoudis ( el, Ιωάννης Φραγκούδης; 1863 – 19 October 1916) was a Greek soldier, athlete and Hellenic Army officer who reached the rank of Colonel. He also competed in the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens as a shooter. Frangoudis is the only Greek athlete who has won a gold, a silver and a bronze medal in a single Olympic. Biography Frangoudis hailed from Limassol, Cyprus, which was under British control at the time, but was born in Zakynthos, where his father worked as a consul. He graduated from the Hellenic Military Academy in 1885, and worked his way up the ranks of the Greek army, being a captain at the time of the 1896 Olympics. After the Greco-Turkish war of 1897, he had become a colonel, and a friend of King George I of Greece. Kyriakos Ioannou
Kyriakos Ioannou ( el, Κυριάκος Ιωάννου, born 26 July 1984) is a Cypriot high jumper. He has twice won medals at the World Championships in Athletics (2007 and 2009) and was the bronze medallist at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in 2008. He is the only medalist for Cyprus at the World Athletics Championships since its creation in 1983. He's also the Cypriot record holder, both outdoors (2.35 m) and indoors (2.32 m). Ioannou is a two-time medallist at the Commonwealth Games (2006 and 2014) and took back-to-back gold medals at the Mediterranean Games in 2005 and 2009. The 2008 Summer Olympics (), officially the Games of the XXIX Olympiad () and also known as Beijing 2008 (), were an international multisport event held from 8 to 24 August 2008, in Beijing, China. A total of 10,942 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competed in 28 sports and 302 events, one event more than those scheduled for the 2004 Summer Olympics. Georgios Achilleos
Georgios Achilleos (; born December 24, 1980) is a Cypriot sports shooter and past World titlist and World No. 1 in Skeet. He is a four-time Skeet Shooting medalist in the World Championships, and a four-time Olympian, with his 5th position in Beijing 2008 being to date (as of 2017) Cyprus’ third-best all time placing at the Olympics, after Pavlos Kontides’ silver medal in Laser sailing in London 2012 and Antonis Nikolaidis’ 4th place in Skeet Shooting in Beijing 2008. He was the national flag bearer at the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics. Achilleos has the existing distinction of being the inaugural Cypriot athlete to set a World Record in an Olympic Sport. Antonis Nikolaidis
Antonis Nikolaidis ( gr, Αντώνης Νικολαϊδης; born 24 January 1967 in Islington, Greater London, Great Britain) is a British-born Cypriot sport shooter. He captured a total of seven medals (three silver and four bronze) in men's skeet shooting at the ISSF World Cup series, and shared titles with Costas Stratis at the 1998 Commonwealth Games and with Georgios Achilleos in the doubles at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and 2006 Commonwealth Games. Nikolaidis also competed for Cyprus in the same discipline in three editions of the Olympic Games (1992, 1996, and 2004), but he neither reached the final round, nor claimed an Olympic medal. Pavlos Kontides
Pavlos Kontides ( gr, Παύλος Κοντίδης, born 11 February 1990) is a Cypriot sailor. He became the first Cypriot athlete ever to win an Olympic medal for his country, by winning the silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the Men's Laser class behind Tom Slingsby. On Tuesday 19 of September 2017, Kontides took the 1st place in 2017 ILCA World Championship in Split, Croatia, becoming a World Champion. He won the championship again in 2018, as well as a silver in 2013. Kontides also competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Men's Laser class, obtaining the 13th place. Lake Placid is a village in the Adirondack Mountains in Essex County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,303. The 1980 Winter Olympics, officially the XIII Olympic Winter Games and also known as Lake Placid 1980, were an international multi-sport event held from February 13 to 24, 1980, in Lake Placid, New York, United States. Lake Placid was elected as the host city for the 1980 Winter Games at the 75th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Vienna, Austria in 1974. This marked the second time the Upstate New York village hosted the Winter Games, after 1932. The only other candidate city to bid for the 1980 games, Vancouver-Garibaldi withdrew before the final vote.
