Cyprien Renaudin
Mathieu-Cyprien Renaudin (27 March 1757, Saint-Denis-d'Oléron – 14 February 1836, Saint-Denis d'Oléron) was a French Navy officer. He was cousin to Jean François Renaudin.Diaz de Soria, p.27 Career Renaudin started sailing as a seaman in 1781 before rising to Ensign on the 20-gun corvette ''Perdrix''. Saint-Denis-d'Oléron (, literally ''Saint-Denis of Oléron'') is a commune on Oléron Island, located in the French department of Charente-Maritime, administrative region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2015: Poitou-Charentes). He is mostly known for captaining the ''Vengeur du Peuple'' at the Fourth Battle of Ushant. Career Early life Renaudin was born to a modest family of Saint-Martin du Gua, and joined the merchant navy before enlisting in the French Royal Navy as a suppleant frigate lieutenant in 1779.Levot, p.431 He served on the fluyt ''Dorade'', on which he took part in four battles. ''Andromaque'' was a 32-gun frigate of the French Navy. Career ''Andromaque'' was commissioned in Brest in 1778 and took part in the American War of Independence. After an overhaul in which she was coppered in April 1780, she captured the British 20-gun post ship on 4 October 1780, off Tortuga. The French Navy took ''Unicorn'' into service as ''La Licorne''. On 21 April 1781, ''Andromaque'' landed troops for the Siege of Pensacola, in the squadron under Monteil. The Glorious First of June (1 June 1794), also known as the Fourth Battle of Ushant, (known in France as the or ) was the first and largest fleet action of the naval conflict between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the First French Republic during the French Revolutionary Wars. The action was the culmination of a campaign that had criss-crossed the Bay of Biscay over the previous month in which both sides had captured numerous merchant ships and minor warships and had engaged in two partial, but inconclusive, fleet actions. The British Channel Fleet under Admiral Lord Howe attempted to prevent the passage of a vital French grain convoy from the United States, which was protected by the French Atlantic Fleet, commanded by Rear-Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse. ''Généreux'' was a French 74-gun ship of the line. After capture she completed her career as part of the Royal Navy as HMS ''Généreux''. History She was launched in 1785 at Rochefort. Under Louis-Jean-Nicolas Lejoille, she was one of only two ships to escape the British attack at the Battle of the Nile in August 1798, along with . Shortly after the battle of the Nile, on 18 August 1798, she fell in with a smaller British ship of the line, of 50 guns. After a long battle, the ''Généreux'' captured the ''Leander'', with the ''Leander'' suffering 35 killed and 57 wounded and the ''Généreux'' suffered around 100 killed and 180 wounded. The Battle of the Malta Convoy was a naval engagement of the French Revolutionary Wars fought on 18 February 1800 during the Siege of Malta. The French garrison at the city of Valletta in Malta had been under siege for eighteen months, blockaded on the landward side by a combined force of British, Portuguese and irregular Maltese forces and from the sea by a Royal Navy squadron under the overall command of Lord Nelson from his base at Palermo on Sicily. In February 1800, the Neapolitan government replaced the Portuguese troops with their own forces and the soldiers were convoyed to Malta by Nelson and Lord Keith, arriving on 17 February.
