Cyprian Lansiquot
Cyprian Lansiquot is a Saint Lucian lawyer and politician. He was a Labour Party member of the House of Assembly of Saint Lucia from 1997 to 2006 and served as a parliamentary secretary. Private career Lansiquot has a diploma and a post-graduate diploma in agriculture from the University of the West Indies and has worked as an agricultural officer. He received a law degree from the University of Wolverhampton in 2004, was called to the Bar of England and Wales in November 2010, and joined the Saint Lucia Bar Association the following month. Politician Lansiquot was elected for the Anse-la-Raye/Canaries constituency in the 1997 national elections, in which the Labour Party won a majority government. Saint Lucia ( acf, Sent Lisi, french: Sainte-Lucie) is an island country of the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean. The island was previously called Iouanalao and later Hewanorra, names given by the native Arawaks and Caribs, two Amerindian peoples. Keith Raymond Rufus Mondesir (born January 23, 1948) is a Saint Lucian politician. He has been a United Workers Party member of the House of Assembly of Saint Lucia and a member of the Saint Lucian cabinet since 2006, serving in the administrations of John Compton and Stephenson King. Early life and career in Canada Mondesir was born in Castries, grew up in Saint Lucia, and later moved to Canada. His ministerial biography indicates that he graduated from George Brown College and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Waterloo, a further Bachelor of Science degree in Optometry from the University of Aston in Birmingham, and a Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston in Texas. He worked as an optometrist in Winnipeg, Manitoba, for twenty-six years. General elections were held in Saint Lucia on 11 December 2006. The elections were fought between the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) and the United Workers Party (UWP), which between them dominated politics in Saint Lucia. The results saw the governing Saint Lucia Labour Party lose the election to the United Workers Party led by John Compton, which gained eight seats to hold an eleven to six majority. Background The last two elections in 1997 and 2001 had seen victories for the Saint Lucia Labour Party with the previous election in 2001 seeing them win 14 seats to only 3 for the United Workers Party. A majority government is a government by one or more governing parties that hold an absolute majority of seats in a legislature. This is as opposed to a minority government, where the largest party in a legislature only has a plurality of seats. A government majority determines the balance of power.
