Cyclograpsus Granulosus
''Cyclograpsus granulosus'', the purple mottled shore crab or smooth shore crab, is an Australasian crab species. Description ''C. granulosus'' grows to a carapace A carapace is a Dorsum (biology), dorsal (upper) section of the exoskeleton or shell in a number of animal groups, including arthropods, such as crustaceans and arachnids, as well as vertebrates, such as turtles and tortoises. In turtles and tor ... width of about , with a carapace mottled with red-brown or purple on yellow. The carapace's frontal regions are granulate, and its lateral margins are convex. Ecology ''C. granulosus'' is most commonly found on stony or boulder beaches. The species occupies both the supralittoral fringe (a region above the level washed by all tides, but subject to flying spray) and the midlittoral region (above the level not uncovered by all tides). However, the species typically occupies the upper midlittoral region. ''C. granulosus'' sometimes scrapes out shallow depressions beneath s ...

Grapsoidea
The Grapsoidea are a superfamily of crabs; they are well known and contain many taxa which are terrestrial (land-living), semiterrestrial (taking to the sea only for reproduction), or limnic (living in fresh water). Another well-known member with a more conventional lifestyle is the Chinese mitten crab, ''Eriocheir sinensis''. The delimitation of the Grapsidae and Plagusiidae is in need of revision; the latter at least is not monophyletic. The same apparently holds true for several genera in the Sesarmidae. The closest living relatives of the Grapsoidea are the Ocypodoidea The Ocypodoidea, or ocypoid crabs, are a superfamily of crabs, named after the genus '' Ocypode''. It contains over 300 extant species in these eight families: * Camptandriidae Stimpson, 1858 * Dotillidae Stimpson, 1858 * Heloeciidae H. Miln .... In fact, they seem to be paraphyletic with respect to each other and it seems warranted to merge the Ocypodoidea into the Grapsoidea. References Exter ...

Miocene
The Miocene ( ) is the first geological epoch of the Neogene Period and extends from about (Ma). The Miocene was named by Scottish geologist Charles Lyell; the name comes from the Greek words (', "less") and (', "new") and means "less recent" because it has 18% fewer modern marine invertebrates than the Pliocene has. The Miocene is preceded by the Oligocene and is followed by the Pliocene. As Earth went from the Oligocene through the Miocene and into the Pliocene, the climate slowly cooled towards a series of ice ages. The Miocene boundaries are not marked by a single distinct global event but consist rather of regionally defined boundaries between the warmer Oligocene and the cooler Pliocene Epoch. During the Early Miocene, the Arabian Peninsula collided with Eurasia, severing the connection between the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean, and allowing a faunal interchange to occur between Eurasia and Africa, including the dispersal of proboscideans into Eurasia. During the ...
