Cycling At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's Road Time Trial
The Women's road time trial at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place on August 13 at the Urban Road Cycling Course. Of the 25 women competing in the event, the medal hopefuls included Karin Thürig (Switzerland), Judith Arndt and Hanka Kupfernagel (Germany), Marianne Vos (Netherlands), Christiane Soeder (Austria), and road race gold medalist Nicole Cooke (Great Britain). Cyclists started at two-minute intervals on the course, which was in length. They competed against the clock rather than in a direct race against the cyclists. 2008 Summer Olympics
The 2008 Summer Olympics (), officially the Games of the XXIX Olympiad () and also known as Beijing 2008 (), were an international multisport event held from 8 to 24 August 2008, in Beijing, China. A total of 10,942 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competed in 28 sports and 302 events, one event more than those scheduled for the 2004 Summer Olympics. Alexandra Wrubleski
Alexandra "Alex" Wrubleski (born 31 May 1984) is a Canadian retired professional road cyclist. She has awarded three Canadian championship titles in both road race and time trial, and later represented her nation Canada at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Wrubleski also raced for the United States' Webcor Builders Cycling Team, before she took a wide sporting break at the end of 2010 season. Professional career Wrubleski was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, and attended Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School. She made her sporting debut as an amateur rider, when she joined the Canadian cycling team in 2006, and earned two national titles in the women's road race and time trial. Strong results landed her an official spot on the team in 2007, followed by her short stints and participation at the Joe Martin Stage Race and Tri-Peaks Challenge, both held in the United States. Oenone Wood (born 24 September 1980 in Newcastle, New South Wales, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia) is a retired professional cycle sport, cyclist, who commenced her cycling career in 2001 at the age of 21. Emma Johansson
Emma Karolina Johansson (born 23 September 1983) is a Swedish retired professional racing cyclist. Nicknamed ''Silver Emma'', Johansson accumulated many second and third places at major championships and one-day classics. In 2013 she finished the year as number one on the UCI Women's World Ranking. She won the silver medal in the women's road race at both the 2008 and 2016 Summer Olympics, as well as one silver and two bronze medals at the Road World championships. Maria Wilhelmina Johanna "Mirjam" Melchers-Van Poppel (born 26 September 1975 in Arnhem, Gelderland) is a female former racing cyclist from the Netherlands, married to former sprinter Jean-Paul van Poppel. She was one of the leading cyclists in the world, having held the UCI number one ranking as well as winning highly rated races. She was a one-day specialist but has managed smaller stage races. In 2003, she won the GP Feminas Castilla y Leon round of the World Cup and finished third overall in the series behind Nicole Cooke and German sprinter Regina Schleicher. Melchers also finished first in the Damesronde van Drenthe and the Emakumeen Bira, before bringing her season to a close with a silver medal at the world championship road race in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Natalia Boyarskaya
Natalia Sergeyevna Boyarskaya (born 27 February 1983) is a Russian former professional racing cyclist. She represented her country at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Boyarskaya broke away from the main peloton in the road race and managed to build up a lead of 59 seconds, but had to stop when she could not see which way to choose. Linda Melanie Villumsen Serup (born 9 April 1985) is a Danish-born road racing cyclist, who last rode for UCI Women's Team . Villumsen became a New Zealand citizen in 2009 and has ridden under a Kiwi licence from 2010. Career Born in Herning, Villumsen won the European under 23 time trial championship in 2006 and 2007.
