Cycling At The 2020 Summer Paralympics – Women's Individual Pursuit B
The women's individual pursuit class B track cycling event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics took place on 28 August 2021 at the Izu Velodrome, Japan. This class is for the cyclist who is blind or has visual impairments, thus they ride tandem bicycles with a sighted cyclist (also known as the pilot). There will be 9 pairs (18 competitors athlete+pilots) from 7 different nations competing. Competition format The competition starts with a qualifying round where a time trial basis will be between the 9 pairs; all 9 pairs will be divided into 5 heats, all heats having 2 pairs except heat 1 which will have 1 pair. The 2 fastest pairs in the qualifying would qualify to the gold medal final while the 3rd and 4th fastest will qualify to the bronze medal final where they will race head-to-head. Izu Velodrome
The Izu Velodrome is a velodrome in Shizuoka, Japan. It has a 250-metre cycling track and spectator facilities for 3,600 people. It was opened in 2011, and was selected as the venue to host the track cycling events at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Helen Scott (cyclist)
Helen Sarah Scott, (born 25 July 1990) is an English sprint cyclist. As well as competing as part of the Great Britain team Scott is also an able-bodied tandem cyclist, who since 2011 has acted as pilot for Paralympian Aileen McGlynn, Sophie Thornhill and Alison Patrick. Biography Scott was born in Birmingham, England in 1990. A keen sportsperson from a young age, her interest in cycling was sparked when her parents moved to Halesowen when she was 10, with Scott joining the local cycling club. Scott was accepted into University of Birmingham to study a degree in Sport, PE and Coaching Science in 2008. She only spent two weeks in Birmingham, leaving after being informed that she had been offered a place at British Cycling's Sprint Academy. Aileen McGlynn
Aileen McGlynn (born 22 June 1973) is a Scottish paralympic tandem champion cyclist, tandem piloted until 2009 by Ellen Hunter but most regularly piloted by Helen Scott. Biography Born in Paisley and grew up in Glasgow, McGlynn was partially sighted at birth, she joined the Glenmarnock Wheelers cycling club at the age of 18 but was initially reluctant to tell her club mates about her disability. However, when the club worked it out they were very supportive. She is also a patron of an organisation called 'Crank It Up' who aim to provide cycling for people of all abilities. Before McGlynn became a full-time athlete, she was a trainee actuary with a degree in mathematics, statistics and management science from the University of Strathclyde. McGlynn and Hunter broke the flying 200m women's tandem World record in April 2004. Larissa Klaassen
Larissa Klaassen (born 7 May 1994) is a visually impaired Dutch Paralympic cyclist. Klaassen and sighted pilot Imke Brommer won the gold medal in the women's time trial B event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics held in Tokyo, Japan. She also set a new Paralympic record of 1:05.291. She represented the Netherlands at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Together with sighted pilot Haliegh Dolman she won the silver medal in the women's 1 km time trial B event.
