Cycling At The 2004 Summer Paralympics
Cycling at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, consisted of 31 events in two disciplines, track cycling and road cycling. Track cycling took place at the Olympic Velodrome, and road cycling at Vouliagmeni. Classifications and events *B 1–3: Visually impaired athletes; these cyclists used tandem bicycles, with an able-bodied rider in the front seat *LC 1–4: Lower limb and other locomotor disabilities graded by severity; unlike most Paralympic classes, higher numbers here indicate more severe conditions *CP 1–4: Athletes with cerebral palsy or a similar disability; 1 and 2 used tricycles, 3 and 4 used bicycles *HC A, B & C: Hand-using athletes, graded according to their degree of paraplegia or quadriplegia; these cyclists used handcycles Track events consisted of: * Individual pursuit *Time trial *Individual sprint, covering three laps of the track *Team sprint, with teams of three Road events consisted of endurance races and time trials. Olympic Velodrome (Athens)
The Athens Olympic Velodrome is a velodrome stadium that is located in Marousi, Athens, Greece, at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex. The stadium, which seats 5,250 - though only 3,300 seats were made publicly available for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games - has distinctive twin roofs, covering the stands on each side. History The Olympic Velodrome was originally built in 1991 as an outdoor venue, for the Mediterranean Games. It was extensively refurbished in order to host the track cycling events at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics. It was redesigned for the 2004 Olympics by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava who added a roof. The track, made of Afzelia wood, is long and wide. Peter Homann
Peter David Homann, OAM (born 16 February 1960) is a former Australian Paralympic cyclist. He has won seven medals at three Games from 1996 to 2004. Personal Homann was born with cerebral palsy on 16 February 1960 in the Victorian town of Yallourn. When he was three, his father, a pharmacist, moved the family to the New Guinean town of Wewak, where he ran the local pharmacy. In a 2000 interview, Homann said of his childhood in the town: He moved to Melbourne to finish high school and university, and later lived in the United Kingdom for four years, where he took up cycling recreationally. He continued cycling when he moved back to Australia, and was interested in the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics. Christopher Scott (cyclist)
Christopher Ian Scott, OAM (born 29 October 1968) is a former Australian Paralympic cyclist. He has won ten medals at six Games from 1988 to 2008. Personal Scott was born in Gympie, Queensland, with cerebral palsy, as the youngest of three children. and moved to Brisbane with his family when he was two years old. At the age of eight, a soccer coach refused to let him join his team because he could not kick the ball with his right foot as well as he could with his left, a rule not enforced on able-bodied players. He consequently joined the next age group's soccer team so he could play with his brother. Scott attended Salisbury State High School and it was here where he began to participate more in sport and became involved in the Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association. Darren Kenny
Darren Kenny (born 17 March 1970) is a British road and track racing cyclist and Paralympian. Kenny's results have made him one of his sport's biggest stars; his dominance over multiple Paralympics gave rise to his nickname of 'Daz the Destroyer'. Javier Otxoa
Javier Otxoa Palacios (30 August 1974 – 24 August 2018) was a Spanish cyclist who was a member of the Kelme cycling team. His name was sometimes spelled Javier Ochoa in media reports. Road cycling career In 2000 Otxoa won a mountain stage in the Tour de France on top of the Hautacam on a cold and rainy day. He broke away with Nico Mattan with to race and dropped him on the '' col de Marie Blanque''. Mattan rejoined him on the descent. Otxoa then dropped him again on the climb to the ''col de l'Aubisque'' and rode alone through the '' col du Soulor'' with nine minutes' lead as he reached the foot of the Hautacam. Johan Reekers (born 28 December 1957, in Enschede) is a Dutch Paralympian who was born without legs. He was on the gold medal winning Dutch sitting volleyball teams of 1980 and 1984. Alejandro Albor (born January 13, 1964) is an American cyclist who won a silver medal at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece and a silver and bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. Franz Nietlispach (born 2 April 1958) is a Swiss wheelchair athlete, handcyclist, and a politician. He has competed in every Summer Paralympic Games from 1976 to 2008, winning an incredible total of fourteen gold, six silver, and two bronze medals. All of these medals were for athletics, except for one bronze earned in hand-cycling at the 2004 Games. Johann Mayrhofer (Handbiker)
Johann Baptist Mayrhofer (22 October 17875 February 1836) was an Austrian poet and librettist. He is best known for his close friendship with the composer Franz Schubert. Biography Mayrhofer was born in Steyr, educated at Novitiate in St. Florian's Priory Upper Austria. In 1810 he began to study jurisprudence and theology at the University of Vienna, both of which courses he finished. He worked as a censor at the Zentral-Bücher-Revisions-Amt in Vienna. In 1814 he met the young composer Franz Schubert and his friends ( Joseph von Spaun, Franz von Schober). From 1818 to 1821 he lived with Schubert in a one-room apartment in a house on Wipplingerstrasse 4.
