Cycling At The 1992 Summer Olympics – Men's Points Race
The men's points race was an event at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. There were 38 competitors from 38 nations, with 24 cyclists competing in the final. Each nation was limited to one cyclist in the event. The event was won by Giovanni Lombardi of Italy, the nation's first victory (and first medal) in the event since 1900 and second victory overall; Italy was the first nation to have two wins in the men's points race. Léon van Bon gave the Netherlands its second consecutive silver in the event. Bronze went to Cédric Mathy of Belgium. Background This was the fourth appearance of the event. It was first held in 1900 and not again until 1984; after that, it was held every Summer Games until 2008 when it was removed from the programme. The women's version was held from 1996 through 2008. Velòdrom D'Horta
Velòdrom d'Horta is a velodrome located in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was the track cycling venue for the 1992 Summer Olympics and was also the venue for the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 1984. The velodrome, designed by Esteve Bonell and Francesc Rius, was built in 1984 as the first of Barcelona's construction projects in preparation for the bid for the 1992 Summer Olympics in 1986. It was the first velodrome built to new FIAC rules permitting a track if surfaced with wood. The building won the FAD architecture prize in 1985. It was the last permanent open-air velodrome used for Olympic Track Cycling events (Atlanta's velodrome at Stone Mountain in 1996 was temporary). James Carney (cyclist)
James (Jame) Monroe Carney (born November 29, 1968) is an American former professional cyclist. He has made two Olympic Teams ( 1992 Barcelona, Spain and 2000 Sydney, Australia). In 2000, he placed 5th in the 40 kilometer Points Race, currently the best finish by an American in that event. Since 2002, Jame elevated his coaching efforts and started to take on aspiring young athletes. In 2008, he took the position of Competition Director of the Cheerwine Woman’s Professional Cycling Team. This Team was the #1 ranked Women’s Team in the United States at the conclusion of the season. Over the past 2 years, he has won many of the premiere US Track cycling events. At the age of 42, he finished 7th place at the Cali, Colombia World Cup and 5th place at the Beijing, China World Cup. Jame won his 22nd National Title at the 2012 Elite Track National Championships.
