Cutler Homestead
The Cutler Homestead is a historic house located at 21 Cutler Street in the town of Morristown in Morris County, New Jersey. Originally built in 1799 by Joseph Cutler for Silas Condict, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 10, 1975, for its significance in architecture, law, and politics/government. With History and description The original two-story section of the house was built in 1799 by Joseph Cutler (1778–1854) for Silas Condict (1738–1801). In 1800, Cutler married Condict's granddaughter, Elizabeth Phoebe Cook. After Condict's death, Cutler was appointed one of the executors. In 1853, it was enlarged by his youngest son, Augustus W. Cutler (1827–1897), with Greek Revival and Gothic Revival styles. His eldest son, Willard Walker Cutler (1856–1926), lived in the house until 1885. Silas Condict
Silas Condict (March 7, 1738 – September 6, 1801) was an American farmer, prominent surveyor, and large landowner from Morris County, New Jersey. He served as a New Jersey delegate to the Continental Congress from 1781 to 1783. Later, he served a number of terms in the State Assembly, and was its Speaker in 1792-1794 and in 1797. His name can be found in archived Congressional records @ " A Biographical Congressional Directory, 1774-1903" (WASHINGTON: 1903)@ page 467 (also naming Dr. John Condict, Silas Condict, Jr. and Sr., and a nephew, Dr. Lewis Condict), found at Google books and at Archive.org. Greek Revival Architecture
The Greek Revival was an architectural movement which began in the middle of the 18th century but which particularly flourished in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, predominantly in northern Europe and the United States and Canada, but also in Greece itself following independence in 1832. It revived many aspects of the forms and styles of ancient Greek architecture, in particular the Greek temple, with varying degrees of thoroughness and consistency. Gothic Revival (also referred to as Victorian Gothic, neo-Gothic, or Gothick) is an architectural movement that began in the late 1740s in England. The movement gained momentum and expanded in the first half of the 19th century, as increasingly serious and learned admirers of the neo-Gothic styles sought to revive medieval Gothic architecture, intending to complement or even supersede the neoclassical styles prevalent at the time.
