Cutting
Cutting is the separation or opening of a physical object, into two or more portions, through the application of an acutely directed force. Implements commonly used for wikt:cut, cutting are the knife and saw, or in medicine and science the scalpel and microtome. However, any sufficiently sharp object is capable of cutting if it has a hardness sufficiently larger than the object being cut, and if it is applied with sufficient force. Even liquids can be used to cut things when applied with sufficient force (see water jet cutter). Cutting is a compression (physical), compressive and shearing (physics), shearing phenomenon, and occurs only when the total stress (physics), stress generated by the cutting implement exceeds the ultimate Strength of materials, strength of the material of the object being cut. Cut (Unix)
In computing, cut is a command line utility on Unix and Unix-like operating systems which is used to extract sections from each line of input — usually from a file. It is currently part of the GNU coreutils package and the BSD Base System. Extraction of line segments can typically be done by bytes (-b), characters (-c), or fields (-f) separated by a delimiter (-d — the tab character by default). A range must be provided in each case which consists of one of N, N-M, N- (N to the end of the line), or -M (beginning of the line to M), where N and M are counted from 1 (there is no zeroth value). Since version 6, an error is thrown if you include a zeroth value. Prior to this the value was ignored and assumed to be 1. History is part of the X/Open Portability Guide since issue 2 of 1987. Cut (advertisement)
''Cut'' is a British advertising campaign launched in 2009 by the charitable organisation Women's Aid to promote awareness of domestic violence. The campaign was created by advertising agency Grey London, and centres on a 120-second commercial starring Keira Knightley. The commercial was supported by poster and online components. ''Cut'' was directed by Joe Wright and produced by Dominic Delaney. Post-production work was handled by Big Buoy and Prime Focus. The campaign drew a significant amount of media attention, especially after advertising approval body Clearcast prohibited the short film from appearing on even post- watershed television, due to several particularly violent scenes. The title of the piece refers to the filmmaking practice of cutting. Sequence ''Cut'' opens with a young actress, played by Keira Knightley, leaving the set after a day's work. ''Cut'' is a 2011 Japanese drama film directed by Amir Naderi, starring Hidetoshi Nishijima and Takako Tokiwa. Reception Neil Young of ''The Hollywood Reporter'' described ''Cut'' as "Amir Naderi's violent homage to Japanese cinema". Dan Fainaru of ''Screen International'' felt that the film is "certainly one of the most significant to come out this year in Venice, both in shape and content."
