Curtis Benton
Horatio Curtis Benton (August 26, 1885 – September 14, 1938) was an American actor and screenwriter for silent films and early talkies. Born in Toledo, Ohio, Benton, attended Vanderbilt University and embarked upon a stage career in 1903, appearing with Robert Hilliard in ''A Fool There Was,'' and two seasons with Cohan and Harris' company where he played parts in ''The Fortune Hunter'', ''Broadway Jones'', and others. His film career included supporting roles in ''The Pursuit Eternal'' (1915), ''Conscience'' (1915) (which he also wrote), ''20,000 Leagues Under the Sea'' (1916), ''Jealousy'' (1916), '' The Siren'' (1917), '' Fireman, Save My Child'' (1932) and ''Kid Galahad'' (1937). Curtis or Curtiss is a common English given name and surname of Anglo-Norman origin from the Old French ''curteis'' (Modern French ''courtois'') which derived from the Spanish Cortés (of which Cortez is a variation) and the Portuguese and Galician Cardoso. The name means "polite, courteous, or well-bred". It is a compound of ''curt-'' "court" and ''-eis'' "-ish". The spelling ''u'' to render in Old French was mainly Anglo-Norman and Norman, when the spelling ''o'' was the usual Parisian French one, Modern French ''ou'' ''-eis'' is the Old French suffix for ''-ois'', Western French (including Anglo-Norman) keeps ''-eis'', simplified to ''-is'' in English. It Is The Law
''It Is the Law'' is a 1924 American silent mystery film directed by J. Gordon Edwards and starring Arthur Hohl, Herbert Heyes, and Mona Palma. It is a film adaptation of the 1922 Broadway play of the same name by Elmer Rice, itself based on a novel by Hayden Talbot. The film depicts the story of Ruth Allen (Palma), who marries Justin Victor (Heyes) over competing suitor Albert Woodruff (Hohl). Seeking revenge for this slight, Woodruff fakes his own death by killing a drifter who resembles him, and frames Victor for the murder. Woodruff attempts to renew his courtship of Allen by using an assumed identity, but she sees through his disguise. Once Victor is freed from prison, he kills Woodruff and goes free because a conviction would constitute double jeopardy. ''The Uninvited Guest'' is a 1924 American silent drama film directed by Ralph Ince, and starring Maurice "Lefty" Flynn, Jean Tolley, Mary MacLaren, William Bailey, and Louis Wolheim. A print of the film exists in the Russian film archive Gosfilmofond. Plot As described in a film magazine review, while voyaging from Australia to New York City, Olive Granger suffers a shipwreck and manages to reach an island. Two other survivors, Irene Carlton and Fred Morgan, gamblers, steal her credentials and go to the United States, where Irene poses as Olive. The latter is rescued by Paul Patterson, a diver, who has to fight off his partner Jan Boomer for her. Boomer meets his demise in the clutching coils of a giant octopus.
