Dyskolos
''Dyskolos'' ( el, , , translated as ''The Grouch'', ''The Misanthrope'', ''The Curmudgeon'', ''The Bad-tempered Man'' or ''Old Cantankerous'') is an Ancient Greek comedy by Menander, the only one of his plays, and of the whole New Comedy, that has survived in nearly complete form. It was first presented at the Lenaian festival in 317–316 BC, where it won Menander the first-place prize. It was long known only through fragmentary quotations; but a papyrus manuscript of the nearly complete ''Dyskolos, ''dating to the 3rd century, was recovered in Egypt in 1952 and forms part of the Bodmer Papyri and Oxyrhynchus Papyri. The play was published in 1958 by Victor Martin. The ''Dyskolos'' inspired Molière, who knew only the theme of the play, as it had not yet been found, in his writing of ''The Misanthrope'' (1666). Plot The play begins with Pan, the god who acts as the driving force behind the play's main actions. Setting the scene, he tells the audience about t ...

The Comics Curmudgeon
The Comics Curmudgeon is an American blog devoted to humorous and critical analysis of newspaper comics. Its author, Josh Fruhlinger, is a freelance writer and editor based in Los Angeles. Content For each blog post, author Josh Fruhlinger selects two to eight comic strips for comment, usually focused on topics such as poor artwork, inappropriate coloring, nonsensical plots, and sexual subtext or innuendo. Long-running soap opera-style comic strips such as ''Apartment 3-G'', '' Mark Trail'', and ''Mary Worth'' bear the brunt of Fruhlinger's humor, an emphasis that he attributes to their being " heperfect targets for the sort of metatextual detached irony that is our generation's terrible contribution to Western civilization." Fruhlinger's blog also features commentary on long-running legacy cartoons like ''Family Circus'' and '' B.C.'' Weekly "metaposts" update readers on notable events in Fruhlinger's life, such as his July 22, 2008, appearance on the game show ''Jeopardy!'', ...

Il Burbero Di Buon Cuore
''Il burbero di buon cuore'' (''The Good-Hearted Curmudgeon'') is an opera dramma giocoso in two acts by Vicente Martín y Soler. The Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte is based on the French comedy ''Le bourru bienfaisant'' by Carlo Goldoni. Background The opera premiered on January 4, 1786 in Vienna at the Burgtheater with a cast that included three well known Viennese singers of the day: Nancy Storace as Angelica, Francesco Benucci as Ferramondo, and Maria Mandini as Marina. The opera premiered in the same year and at the same house as Mozart's ''Le nozze di Figaro'', and both operas enjoyed revivals at the Burgtheater three years later – each boasting two new arias for new leading ladies. The new arias for ''Il burbero di buon cuore'' ("Chi sa, chi sa, qual sia" K. 582 in act 1 and "Vado, ma dove?" K. 583 in act 2, both for Lucilla) were actually composed by Mozart, as Martín y Soler had left Vienna to work at the court of Catherine the Great in Saint Petersburg. T ...
