Curly On The Rack
''Curly on the Rack'' is a 1958 Australian play by Ru Pullan set in Rabaul after World War II. Pullan was an experienced radio writer. The play came about from a discussion Pullan had with a friend about treasure left behind in the war. It was presented by the Elizabethan Theatre Trust at a time when production of Australian plays was rare. It was considered a disappointment after their successful productions of ''The Shifting Heart'' and ''Summer of the Seventeenth Doll''. Plot After World War Two, two brothers, the tough Max and the gentler Harry, live in Rabaul with their sister Pet, salvaging war time equipment. Their truck driver, Curly, waits for his opportunity to recover £10,000 he planted on a nearby island during the Japanese invasion along with a fellow soldier called Scobie. Ru Pullan
Ru Pullan (1916–1993) was an Australian writer of radio, television, novels, short stories and theatre. He was one of the leading radio writers in Australia in the 1940s and 1950s. Writing as Luke Hardin, Cass Durand and Lew Rand, he published 50 novels in the western genre between 1962 and 1970. He also wrote romance novels using the pseudonyms Paul Easton and Wynne Barrie. Rabaul
Rabaul () is a township in the East New Britain province of Papua New Guinea, on the island of New Britain. It lies about 600 kilometres to the east of the island of New Guinea. Rabaul was the provincial capital and most important settlement in the province until it was destroyed in 1994 by falling ash from a volcanic eruption in its harbour. During the eruption, ash was sent thousands of metres into the air, and the subsequent rain of ash caused 80% of the buildings in Rabaul to collapse. The Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust is a theatre and performing arts company that was founded in September 1954, with the aim of establishing drama, opera and ballet companies nationally. Grant Taylor (Australian Actor)
Ronald Grant Taylor (6 December 1917 – 1971) was an English-Australian actor best known as the abrasive General Henderson in the Gerry Anderson science fiction series ''UFO'' and for his lead role in ''Forty Thousand Horsemen'' (1940). Early life Taylor was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in England, but moved to Australia with his parents as a child. For a time he worked as a professional boxer in Melbourne under the name of Lance Matheson. According to a later newspaper report, he had 70 bouts, lost eight and drew 11. He reportedly also served in the merchant marine. Acting debut Cinesound Productions were looking for someone with wrestling skills to play the part of a gorilla in '' Gone to the Dogs'' (1939), so Taylor auditioned. Ken Wayne (1925–1993) was an Australian actor of radio, theatre, film and television. He made his film debut in '' Sons of Matthew'' (1949) and appeared in a number of movies including ''Dust in the Sun'' (1958). George Leslie Clarke Rees (28 December 1905 – 17 August 2000) was an Australian writer for children who was born and raised in Perth, Western Australia. Career He attended Perth Modern School and then the University of Western Australia, where he edited the student magazine, ''Black Swan''. He then worked for The West Australian as a journalist before travelling to London to study at University College on a scholarship. It was while there that he married fellow Western Australian, Coralie Clarke, who had been a sub-editor during his time on the ''Black Swan''. Rees returned to Australia in 1936 to become the Australian Broadcasting Commission's first federal drama editor in Sydney. He was also President of PEN (Sydney) for a number of years.
