Alexander Cuming
Sir Alexander Cuming, 2nd Baronet (1691–1775) was a Scottish adventurer to North America; he returned to Britain with a delegation of Cherokee chiefs. He later spent many years in a debtors' prison. Early life Cuming was born (according to his manuscript autobiography) in Edinburgh on 18 December 1691. He was the only son of Sir Alexander Cuming, M.P. (c.1670–1725), the first baronet of Culter, Aberdeenshire, by his first wife, Elizabeth; she was the second daughter of the second wife of Sir Alexander Swinton, a Scottish judge. (He had several sisters and a half-brother, James Cuming of Breda, by his father's second wife) In 1714 he was called to the Scottish bar, and also held a captain's commission in the Russian army. Frederick Cuming (cricketer)
A cricket tournament, played as part of the 1900 Summer Olympics, took place on 19–20 August at the Vélodrome de Vincennes. The only match of the tournament was played between teams representing Great Britain and France and was won by 158 runs by Great Britain. The team for the French club included at least 11 British nationals, two of whom were born in France, and it is considered a mixed team. Originally, teams representing Belgium, France, Great Britain, and the Netherlands were scheduled to compete in a knockout tournament. After Belgium and the Netherlands withdrew, this left Great Britain to play France in a one-off match. Neither team was nationally selected: the British side was a touring club, the Devon and Somerset Wanderers (alias ''Devon County Wanderers''), while the French team, the French Athletic Club Union, comprised mainly British expatriates living in Paris. Frederick George Rees Cuming (February 16, 1930 – 12 June, 2022), normally known as Fred Cuming, was a contemporary British landscape painter, who worked in a traditional manner. Life and art Cuming was born in London of English, Scottish and Irish ancestry.Buckman, David: "Dictionary of Artists in Britain since 1945", page 362. Art Dictionaries, 2006 He received his art education at Sidcup School of Art (1945–9) and, after National Service, at the Royal College of Art. He was awarded the Abbey Minor Travelling Scholarship to visit Italy. In 1969, he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA), and a Royal Academician (RA) in 1974. He was elected as a member of the New English Art Club in 1960. Hugh Cuming
Hugh Cuming (14 February 1791 – 10 August 1865) was an England, English collecting, collector who was interested in natural history, particularly in conchology and botany. He has been described as the "Prince of Collectors". Born in England, he spent a number of years in Chile, where he became a successful businessman. He used the money he saved to buy a ship that was specifically built for collecting specimens, and travelled extensively on collecting trips amassing many thousands of specimens. After his death, much of his material was bought by the Natural History Museum, London, Natural History Museum in London. A number of species are named after him. Walter Comyn, Lord Of Badenoch
Walter Comyn, Lord of Badenoch (died 1258) was the son of William Comyn, Justiciar of Scotia and Mormaer or Earl of Buchan by right of his second wife. Life Walter makes his first appearance in royal charters as early as 1211–1214. In 1220, he accompanied King Alexander II of Scotland during the latter's visit to York. He appears as "Lord of Badenoch" as early as 1229, after the defeat of the Meic Uilleim by his father. Like his father, Walter was given the hand of an heiress, Isabella, Countess of Menteith. By 1234, Isabella had inherited the Mormaerdom of Menteith, and so Walter became Mormaer or Earl of Menteith by right of his wife ('' jure uxoris''). Walter appears to have had a son named Henry who witnessed a charter, dated to 1250, of Maol Domhnaich, Mormaer of Lennox. His daughter Isabel was given in marriage to Gilchrist Mure. Cuming County is a county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 9,139. Its county seat is West Point. In the Nebraska license plate system, Cuming County is represented by the prefix 24 since it had the 24th largest number of vehicles registered in the state when the license plate system was established in 1922. History Cuming County was formed in 1855 and organized in 1857. It was named for Thomas B. Cuming, the first secretary (and twice Acting Governor) of the newly created Nebraska Territory (1854–1858). The courthouse dates from the 1950s. On August 26, 2019, the DHHS announced that West Point's water was unsafe to drink after a year of complaints from citizens of the town. Cuming Inlet is a body of water in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, Canada. It lies off the southern coast of Devon Island in the eastern high Arctic. Like Stratton Inlet, Burnett Inlet, Hobhouse Inlet, and Powell Inlet, Cuming Inlet is situated between Maxwell Bay and Croker Bay, north of Lancaster Sound and Barrow Strait. Cuming Museum
The Cuming Museum in Walworth Road in Elephant and Castle, within the London Borough of Southwark, London, England, was a museum housing the collection of the Cuming family and later collections on Southwark's history. As of 2021, its collections have been rehoused in a new Southwark Heritage Centre. Richard Cuming (1777–1870) started his collecting life when he was only five with some fossils and a coin that had been given to him by a family friend. That ignited a passion for collecting, which lasted for his lifetime. He made his first significant purchases in 1806 at the sale of the Leverian Museum. His interests covered geology, scientific equipment and animalia. The collection was bequeathed to the people of Southwark by his son, Henry Syer Cuming, in 1902, and the museum opened in 1906.
