Cumberland Public Schools
Cumberland School Department is the school district of Cumberland, Rhode Island. History Phil Thornton became the superintendent in 2011. In 2015 he was to leave his role as superintendent, and became superintendent of Warwick Public Schools. Bob Mitchell was chosen by school board members to become the next superintendent, and he began his term that year. In 2019 the school board gave Mitchell an additional two years as superintendent. Cumberland, Rhode Island
Cumberland is the northeasternmost town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States, first settled in 1635 and incorporated in 1746. The population was 36,405 at the 2020 census, making it the seventh-largest municipality and the largest town in the state. History Cumberland was originally settled as part of Wrentham, Massachusetts, which was purchased from the local Indigenous Americans by the Plymouth Colony. It was later transferred to Rhode Island as part of a long-running boundary dispute. The town was named in honor of Prince William, Duke of Cumberland. William Blackstone (also spelled William Blaxton in colonial times) was the first European to settle and live in Cumberland. Warwick Public Schools (Rhode Island)
Warwick Public Schools (WPS) is the public school district of Warwick, Rhode Island. History In October 2015, Philip Thornton became the superintendent of the school district; he was previously the superintendent of the Cumberland School Department. Circa 2016 there was a plan to close and repurpose elementary schools that was to affect 600 students. The Warwick Teachers Union opposed the plan. In 2019, the district announced that students which had families with school lunch fee debts would only be permitted to have sandwiches filled with jelly and nut butter. In response, the company Chobani paid fees of the students, and Hamdi Ulukaya, the head of the company, criticized the policy. The school district ended the sandwich rule. In 2021 Thornton became the Cumberland superintendent again. Lynn Dambruch replaced him as Warwick superintendent. Valley Breeze
A mountain breeze and a valley breeze are two related, localized winds that occur one after the other on a daily cycle. They are an example of anabatic and katabatic winds occurring at local scales. These winds are opposite from each other. Mountain winds blow from mountain towards valley after sunset, when mountain cools down and valley zone is comparatively warmer. While valley breezes occur when the warm air rises up the sides of the valley, warm air in a mountain breeze will rise up the middle. Cumberland High School (Rhode Island)
Cumberland High School is a public school located in Cumberland, Rhode Island. In its current location since 1962, the school serves approximately 1,500 students. Statistics History The current building was built in 1961 and renovated in 1973. The town's mayor presented a capital improvement plan for the school in 2002, but funding was limited and residents questioned the project's first phase plans for a wellness center (athletic complex). A few months later, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges gave the school until October 2005 to improve the school's facilities and technology or have its accreditation status placed on probation. A town referendum was held in September 2005 asking voters to approve the town borrowing $30 million to renovate Cumberland High School.
