Cumberland Hospital (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Cumberland Hospital was a 366-bed municipal hospital located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. History They opened as ' at 109 Cumberland Street on February 13, 1873, and was rebuilt in 1918. The new facility was renamed Cumberland Hospital in 1922. Later locations for ''Cumberland'' include 35 (1953) and then 39 (1962) Auburn Place. Subsequent to closing as a hospital on August 24, 1983, it became an outpatient clinic called Neighborhood Family Care Center. The day after their 1983 closing the city began a free shuttle bus service from Cumberland to Woodhull Hospital, then-described as "one of the most modern and expensive hospitals in the world." Cumberland Hospital is a public psychiatric hospital located in Westmead, in Sydney's west. Along with Bungarribee House, Blacktown Hospital it serves the mental health needs of Western Sydney. As a public hospital it is part of the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD). History The site was formally the ''residence'' of female convicts. Female convicts were housed separately from the male population. In 1817 Governor Macquarie commissioned the building of more permanent structures. Female convicts housed on this site were made to work and the site became known as ''The Female Factory''. The Factory housed unassigned, unmarried female convicts, and their children. Although transportation of convicts to New South Wales ceased in 1840 the site was maintained as a place for female convicts until 1847. In 1849 the buildings were redesignated a Lunatic Asylum. Fort Greene is a neighborhood in the northwestern part of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Cornelia Lucretia Brant (; December 16, 1863 – March 9, 1959) was an American doctor. After starting a family, she started a medical career as a mature student, graduating from the New York Medical College and Hospital for Women in 1903. She assumed the position of Dean in 1914, served as part of the Council of National Defense during the First World War, and then practiced as a GP in Brooklyn from 1918 to 1939. She was an active club woman and was the president of the Brooklyn Woman's Club. Early life She was born Cornelia "Nellie" Lucretia Chase to a Quaker family in Ottawa, Illinois on December 16, 1863.
