Culwick Choral Society
Culwick Choral Society is an amateur choir in Dublin, founded in 1898 by the English born, musician and choirmaster Dr. James Cooksey Culwick. Following Dr. Culwicks death in 1907 his daughter Florence Culwick reestablished the choir, becoming its director. The society celebrated its centenary in 1998. The choir presents a number of concerts each year such as the Christmas Concert (''A Culwick Christmas''), Events, To Be Irish. and Messiah Concert, performing regularly in venues such as the National Concert Hall, and St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. James Cooksey Culwick
James Cooksey Culwick (28 April 1845 – 5 October 1907) was an English musician who is most well known for being organist of the Chapel Royal and founding the Orpheus Choir, both in Dublin, Ireland. The Culwick Choral Society is both named in honour of Culwick and traces its lineage to the Orpheus Choir. Biography Early life Culwick was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England. At the age of fourteen he became a chorister in Lichfield Cathedral where his father, also a musician, was a lay clerk. He took lessons from the then cathedral organist, Thomas Bedsmore, and was later appointed assistant organist. He subsequently took the role of church organist at the Church of St Chad, Lichfield. Ireland Culwick moved to Ireland in 1866, filling the position of organist at Parsonstown, King's County, before moving to Bray Parish Church in 1870 and then St. Ann's Church, Dawson Street in 1871. Florence Culwick
Florence Culwick (4 November 1877 – 30 August 1929) was an Irish musical conductor who became the director of the Culwick Choral Society. Biography Florence Culwick was born at 21 Upper Lesson Street, Dublin. She was the daughter of James Cooksey Culwick (1845–1907), professor of music, and Mary Jane (née Richardson), his second wife. She attended Alexandra College, Dublin, excelling at music. She went on to teach music at Alexandra College. Her father held a number of positions as organist in Dublin, finally at Chapel Royal, Dublin Castle where he remained until his death in 1907. Following his death, Florence Culwick re-established his choral society after a hiatus, initially called Miss Culwick's Choral Society. This made her Dublin's first female conductor. During World War I the choir was exclusively female, but in 1919 it was back at full strength and flourishing. Bernie Sherlock
Bernie Sherlock is an Irish choral conductor, adjudicator, teacher, and lecturer in music. Biography Bernie Sherlock is an Irish conductor of choral music who is conductor of the multi-award-winning chamber choir New Dublin Voices which she founded in 2005, and of the Culwick Choral Society. She received her training in choral conducting from Ildikó Herboly Kocsár and Peter Erdei during two years of study in Hungary. She subsequently continued her studies with Gerhard Markson and earned a Masters in Conducting from NUI Maynooth. Sherlock has extensive experience directing a wide range of choirs. She was for ten years the Choral Director at the Dublin Institute of Technology Conservatory of Music & Drama, during which time she led the DIT Chamber Choir to numerous first prizes at the Cork International Choral Festival and at Dublin Feis Ceoil.
